Frozenheart glanced around the area. They needed to find weak prey, even more so because Rainstripe seemed to be a novice. Trying for a strong rat was not an option here.
About a dozen tail-lengths away, newborn rats nursed on their mother.

Rainstripe's yellow-green eyes narrowed as she focused on the rats. The young rats would make easy prey, but would they be able to steal them from the mother? The three of them together might be able to take down the mother as well- if she could remember. /I think it's like hunting lizards, but when you pounce, you have to be ready for the rat to fight back, like a fight between two cats./ she thought to herself.

Sandwhisker flicked her tail in anticipation. The thrill of the hunt; the chase and the capture, the thought made adrenaline course through her veins. Glancing from side to side at her fellows, the she cat hunkered down against the sandy floor and began to creep forwards slowly and surely. Her light brown fur blended in well with her surroundings, perfect camouflage for hunting rats.

Rainstripe copied Sandwhisker, glad the sandy colored she-cat knew what she was doing. Excitement made her whiskers tremble, and she hoped with all her strength that she didn't trip over something. Not now of all times. She began to creep forward, yellow-green eyes flickering back and forth between Sandwhisker and the rat.

The white tom stood frozen in place. What did they think they were doing? From the looks of things, they were headed right for the rat with pups.
The maternal rat noticed the cats right off and got to her paws, baring her yellow teeth. This caused the helpless newborns to emit loud squeaks in protest.

Sandwhisker bared her teeth in reply. In her head she was weighing all of her options quickly; as soon as they got rid of the mother rat, the babies would be easy pickings. Chancing a glance from side to side, the she-cat noticed happily that Rainstripe was following her lead, but then she realised Frozenheart had stayed where he was. Another grumble curled from her belly as the rich scent of rat wafted past her and she flicked her tail from side to side, waiting to see what her allies would do.

Frozenheart swished his tail when Sandwhisker didn't back down. Was she that inexperienced?
The mother rat's fur stood on end. It took a protective stance over its pups, teeth chattering as it glared at them with a steely gaze.

Rainstripe knew that even an inexeperienced rat hunter like herself could take down even the strongest rat with two allies to help. She decided to go right for the chattering mother, stalking forward, all her muscles tensed to either pounce or flee if the rat attacked first. Rainstripe knew that infected rat bites could lead to death. She was too young to die, and had to prevent rat bites.

Sandwhisker ignored the astonished glares of Frozenheart. She hunted rats her own way; speed was everything. The she-cat was a very fast mover, she generally brought down rats by lunging in to bite or claw and then whipping away again. It was safer than a fight and this time around, she was bolstered with the confidence of having two others to help her.
