Rainstripe would have been successful, had the rat been paralyzed and unable to move, which it wasn't. Sandwhisker had a different problem - she was trying to claw the rat's tail, from in front of the rat. The result of all this was an enfuriated rodent leaping at Sandwhisker's face with fangs bared. Considering how close the she-cat had to come in order to reach for its tail, there wasn't much distance between them.

Rainstripe gasped as the rat leaped for Sandwhisker. She knew what could happen when the rat's fangs met the other she-cat's shoulder, not right then, but later, if it got infected. That's how cats died. Rainstripe didn't want to lose one of the few cats she thought of as a friend. In desperation, the she-cat darted forward and faked a slash at the rodent's flank. Immediately, she leaped back, hoping it would forget Sandwhisker for a moment.

Sandwhisker darted to one side just in time; her green eyes wide with shock. She had made a rookie's mistake! Evidently she was far more out of practice for rat hunting than she had first thought. Glad that had just avoided the fangs of the rodent, Sandwhisker crept backwards warily. Determination burned inside her. She had made herself look like an idiot in front of two other cats and she wasn't going to give up now. Slowly, she began to prowl in a circle around the vicious critter, watching and waiting for an opening.

After missing Sandwhisker, the rat crouched over its young with a threatening glare at its attackers.
Frozenheart rushed forward, now quite worried. He stepped in front of Sandwhisker and tried to push her away from the rats. They had taken this joke too far.

"What are you doing?" Rainstripe hissed at Frozenheart. She was relieved that Sandwhisker hadn't been bitten, and even more relieved that the rat hadn't tried to attack her. The only question left was what they would do next. Frozenheart should've been looking for an opening in the rat's defenses, not blocking Sandwhisker. Other cats were so confusing! Rainstripe wished for the familiar comfort of the enclosure wall rubbing up against her striped fur, giving her a sense of safety.

Sandwhisker shot Frozenheart a dirty glare, too embarrassed to admit to her mistake. Backing off slightly, she muttered in a low voice to Rainstripe "Any ideas?" It was a dangerous situation, yes, but Sandwhisker wasn't one to give up and her belly gave another loud snarl of hunger. Keeping her eyes glued to the rat, Sandwhisker awaited Rainstripe's reply.

Rainstripe's eyes widened and anxiety twisted her stomach into knots. She was a complete novice! A rookie! And yet, here was Sandwhisker, asking her to make an important decision about something she knew nothing about. Her eyebrows furrowed in confusion. "I don't know!" she replied angrily. "I'm the newbie, remember? You're supposed to tell me how to hunt rats, not the other way around!"

While the cats were distracted, the rat ushered its young into the throng of other rodents.
Frozenheart gave Sandwhisker a more-than-dissaproving look in return and lifted his paw to cuff her ear, as though punishing a disobedient kit. He was calling this off.

Rainstripe looked confused. "What happened?" she meowed quizzically at Frozenheart. "Why'd we stop?" The young, inexperienced she-cat was completely and utterly lost. She noticed his disapproving expression, and turned her head to the ground, face burning with embarrassment. "I'm sorry for whatever I did wrong," she meowed softly.
