Sandwhisker nodded back tersely and padded towards them. Flicking her tail in acknowledgment of Spiderpaw, she inquired "What do you think of a clan?" From what she had heard of their conversation, she had gathered that they were debating about the possibility of a clan. Frozenheart was evidently against - as was she - but Sandwhisker was still interested to hear what Spiderpaw had to say.

Smudgeheart paused on his way past the conversing group of cats. Maybe he could ask them if they had seen his mother... well, just maybe. He'd just have to walk over to them and ask the simple question. But, how could he? There was a tom over there, after all. He hated that fact....
But he would just have to deal with it. It wasn't like it was gonna kill him. Plus, he'd probably just ignore him like he did with all the other toms. He could chat with the two she-cats, maybe.
The gray-and-white tom padded over, his head and tail both held high. He wouldn't try to show his annoyance at the fact that there was another tom; though, some of his fur was fluffed up. All I have to do is ask the she-cats, he chanted to himself in his head, just ignore tom....
He paused a few cricket-lengths away from the other cats, the she-cats in particular and mewed, "Have any of you seen a small ginger she-cat? I can be more descriptive, if you'd like....?"

Frozenheart paused to think, sifting through his memories of that morning, then nodded. He did recall seeing a ginger tabby earlier - though whether or not it was the she-cat whom this tom was seeking, he did not know. He expected the stranger would be more descriptive anyway.

Rainstripe hurried past the large group of cats, her fur fluffed up with anxiety. She just kept walking, ignoring the cats. Then one of them said something that made her think, something about whether or not they wanted to be in a clan. The she-cat's fear was urging her to continue, pushing her past them, but part of her wanted to stay and have a say in the matter. Slowly, against all her better instincts, Rainstripe crept towards the large group of cats, her whiskers trembling with terror. Her breaths were shallow and nervous as she stepped farther away from the wall and closer to the cats- the largest group of cats she had been close to in her entire life. Settling on the outskirts of the group, closest to the nearest wall, she began to speak in a timid, trembling meow. "I-I think a clan is a bad idea. I wouldn't want to have to live with so many cats, and I definitely don't want a leader bossing me around." The last half of her small speech was said more courageously as her confidence grew. Suddenly, she remembered hearing a gray and white tom asking about a small ginger she-cat, and promptly tripped over her tail, which had been curled around her paws. Shaking the sand off her face, she replied, "N-no I haven't." /I haven't really seen /anyone/ really, except Spiderpaw and Bigstep and-/ Her thoughts were cut off as she noticed Spiderpaw's black fur. "Spiderpaw!' Rainstripe called out, her gray tabby fur upright with excitement. She was glad to see a familiar face among the sea of unknown ones. She felt more comfortable knowing Spiderpaw was there.

Spiderpaw smiled at Rainstripe. "How are you?" she meowed warmly. 'Okay, so there are two cats here that are against a Clan, one for a Clan - me - and two cats undeclared. Hmm.'

Sandwhisker spat grumpily "Huh, whoever thinks a clan is a good idea must have bees in their brain." She glared boldly around the group. "I for one would despise relying on cats who cannot be trusted. You all know the legend of what happened all those moons ago; the leader and deputy sealed us in and ran off." A sour look crossed her face "If you ask me, we are all far better off alone."

Rainstripe cocked her head, thinking about what the she-cat had said. She was right, how would they know to trust a leader? What if they ran off like the cats in the legend? And besides, the following-orders thing still made her fur bristle. Rainstripe nodded slowly, the she-cat's words sinking slowly into her fur. The cats /were/ better off alone, especially since large groups of cats were so scary to her. Why any cat would want a clan, she didn't know. Remembering that Spiderpaw was all for the clan idea, Rainstripe turned to face her. "Why in the world would you want to be surrounded by cats day and night and have to follow the orders of whatever cat deemed themselves leader?" Rainstripe asked. She had always seen Spiderpaw as a very sensible, smart cat. Why did she want something as crazy as a Clan?

Frozenheart looked at Sandwhisker and shook his head at her last statement. No one was better off alone. Frowning, he wondered how she ever expected to eat if she never interacted with others. The cats needed each other; that much he knew.
The problem he had with Clanhood was not so much the idea of a leader as the other ranks involved. From what he had heard, Clan cats were divided into ranks based on their age and abilities. It seemed to him that it would be far too easy for that situation to become unfair, all the more so for cats like him.

Raintripe grew more confused as the white tom shook his head to disagree with the she-cat. "Then what don't you like about a clan, if you think cats should be together?" What other reasons were there to dislike Clans? She ran through all her clan information in her head. The clans had a leader, they had a deputy, warriors, apprentices, queens, kits and elders, and they all lived together and protected their territory. Really, the only problems she saw were the living-together thing- a shudder still ran up her spine when she thought about that- and the leader. Rainstripe frowned and sat down in the sand, trying to think.

Frozenheart sent Rainstripe a disapproving glare. Was she that unimaginative? He didn't have to explain anything to her; she should figure it out herself.
