Woodstripe tilted her head. "You don't trust yourself, Bronzefoot? And Frailheart - are you suggesting that retaining an unprincipled cat inside the Clan would protect the cats who are not members?"

"Yes, I trust myself, but I would never want to be the leader of a Clan. Are you implying that you think I am a good candidate?" Bronzefoot stared at her.
"No, I'm not suggesting that, but I assume that the Clan cats and the non-Clanners would not mingle too much, staying in different areas," Frailheart meowed. "Are you suggesting otherwise?"

"No, Bronzefoot, though I do know you are a good and valiant cat. What I'm implying is that you are intelligent enough to notice any serious faults in cats who want you to support them as leader. You are intelligent, are you not? Or are you a fool? Forgive my questions; I'm not well-acquainted with you."
Woodstripe sighed and looked at her paws. "Once again Frailheart's only protest to the formation of a Clan seems to be that others wouldn't be in the Clan." She raised her eyes with an earnest look. "Is this the only fault you find?"

"I do not trust other cats; therefore, I would never support any candidate for leader. I'm no fool, either," Bronzefoot meowed good-naturedly.
"Did I say that?" Frailheart asked with a scowl. "No. I think that every cat should get food and water for themselves and their families, and no one else. It makes it a whole lot easier for all of us; the circle of life continues unharmed. And I think I've already mentioned what might happen if there was a big fight, which is probable if someone tried to make a Clan."

"You are correct: you are no fool, Bronzefoot. However, does what you've said mean that you don't trust other cats because you fear they will make a fool of you?
"A Clan would in no way harm the circle of life. When other cats aid one another in their unoccupied time, this does not cause difficulty. Now, Frailheart, it still seems as though you're arguing that there shouldn't be a Clan because some cats might not want a Clan."

"You're twisting my words, Woodstripe," Bronzefoot meowed with a glare. "I don't trust other cats simply because I don't think other cats are trustworthy."
"A Clan is unnecessary. Cats are doing just fine on their own," Frailheart meowed. "You aren't acknowledging out loud that fighting is possible if change were to happen."

"Fighting is possible if change were to happen," Woodstripe meowed before turning to lick her shoulder, ignoring the tom's glare. Then she recalled an unanswered question and looked up. "Were you not hunting a rat with my brother earlier, Bronzefoot?"

Bronzefoot raised his eyebrows. "Depends on who your brother is. How is that important to this discussion?"
"Loss of life is also possible, indicating a possible unbalance in the amount of living cats," Frailheart meowed. "Which - as I mentioned before - could possibly bring the extinction of living cats, the only known intelligent life."
