From himself. He watched his parents hunt for a while, and when he thought he got the hang of it, so he tried it by himself. He didn't think that it could be that hard.

Right, sounds like the normal progression of learning to hunt. So what'd he do, yell "I'M NOT LISTENING" whenever his parents offered any advice?

He just went off and tried to teach himself from watching his parents hunt.
