"Why not? Did his father brainwash him to trust no one but him?" -- No, his father was his favorite cat in the enclosure and he was very sad when he died.
"Now you're going in circles. What do you mean by "live with them"?" -- Taken care of each other as a family.
"I'm not convinced their well-meaning advice could persuade him to starve himself. What else was there to it?" -- He just wanted to try by himself.

"No, his father was his favorite cat in the enclosure and he was very sad when he died." -- And why wouldn't he like and respect a cat similar to his father?
"Taken care of each other as a family." -- Which entails what?
"He just wanted to try by himself." -- Try starving? For serious, what did they do to make him like this?

"And why wouldn't he like and respect a cat similar to his father?" -- Because he would feel like he would be betraying his father.
"Which entails what?" -- Hunting, sleeping, fighting, looking after one another...
"For serious, what did they do to make him like this?" -- Tell him that cats should be able to look after themselves.

"Because he would feel like he would be betraying his father." -- What makes that a betrayal?
"Hunting, sleeping, fighting, looking after one another..." -- Hunting with and sleeping alongside unrelated cats isn't really abandoning your family. ...Fighting? Fighting whom?
"Tell him that cats should be able to look after themselves." -- And?

"What makes that a betrayal?" -- If he listened and followed the rules of another cat besides his father.
"Hunting with and sleeping alongside unrelated cats isn't really abandoning your family. ...Fighting? Fighting whom?" -- /is having a very hard time explaining this You know, as a family?
"And?" -- The whole family believed that cats should be able to look after themselves.

"If he listened and followed the rules of another cat besides his father." -- Didn't you say his father didn't brainwash him to listen to no one but him?
"You know, as a family?" -- What did they have to fight?
"The whole family believed that cats should be able to look after themselves." -- From the first second after birth?

"Didn't you say his father didn't brainwash him to listen to no one but him?" -- He didn't, but Icefang would still feel like it was a betrayal.
"What did they have to fight?" -- I don't know... other cats?
"From the first second after birth?" -- No. Icefang was older than that, and he also inferred that from his parent's words.

"Icefang would still feel like it was a betrayal." -- Why?
"I don't know... other cats?" -- What would they fight them over?
"he also inferred that from his parent's words." -- And the moment he heard them, he decided he didn't need them and would go off on his own?

"Why?" -- Because it is another cat besides his father, who cannot ever be replaced.
"What would they fight them over?" -- Forget the whole fighting part.
"And the moment he heard them, he decided he didn't need them and would go off on his own?" -- No, but after a while, ideas formed in his head.

"Because it is another cat besides his father, who cannot ever be replaced." -- He's not getting replaced.
You look up to, or at least pretend to obey, authorities other than the main folks who raised you, right? For example, I'm in charge of this site, and does that mean I'm replacing your parents? Heck no. So what's this guy's problem with all other cats?
"No, but after a while, ideas formed in his head." -- From what other ideas and experiences?
