Patchfur was right about one thing -- elders and kits were important. Since the Experiment didn't have any kits at the moment, Shortwhisker dragged the rat carcass to Dingypaw and let go of it (for to say "dropped it" would be superfluous, seeing as most of it was on the ground anyhow). "Th-there!" he gasped.
A smile brightened Woodstripe's face. "I see the hunt was a success. May it be one of many."

Dingypaw's eyes lit up as Shortwhisker dragged the rat carcass over to her. Sure, it was covered with sand and some unfortunate insects, but that really didn't matter. It had been quite a few seasons since the elder had tasted rat meat, and she gently poked it with one claw to make sure it was real and that she wasn't dreaming. She decided to give Shortwhisker another chance and meowed, "Thank you. It's been quite a long time since I've tasted rat meat." The appearance of the carcass solidified her desire to join the Clan. This was the right choice for survival. Without bothering to look around at the other cats to ask if they wanted some, Dingypaw tore into the meat, savoring the delicious flavor, gorging herself on it, though after seasons of eating crickets and lizards her stomach couldn't handle more than a few bites of it. When she felt like she was about to retch, Dingypaw pulled her face out of the carcass, unable to remember the last time she had had such a filling meal.

Barkpaw happily padded behind the rest of the hunting party, who were headed back to the others in the Experiment. Now was his chance to share his meat with Redstream.
Once he spotted the pretty orange tabby, he trotted over to her proudly, the meat in his jaws. He set it at her feet. "Here you are, darling," he told her. But he could stay; he had to give some to Blackfoot, as well. So, after telling her, "Sorry I can't stay, but I'll be back soon," he grabbed the rest of his meat and dashed off to find his aunt.

Dottedfoot blinked. Who were these cats? She could swear she knew the black and white one who stuttered; Shortwhisker, wasn't that his name? Woodstripe seemed to know them, so they were probably Clanners.
"Uh..." She mumbled, unsure of what to say. She watched Dingypaw stuff her face with rat. The gray and white she-cat longed to do the same, but didn't want to be taken as uncivilized. So she shuffled her paws, orange eyes casting sideways glances at the other elder. "...can I have a piece?" And maybe someone would hear her, if she was lucky. Idiot, she was.
Why could she never speak up for herself?

Patchfur shrugged. "Sure, I mean, we brought this for you. You don't really have to ask permission," he meowed, looking over at Dingypaw. "It's probably been a long time since you've tasted rat. We've already eaten, so don't worry about us. Oh, and I'm Patchfur. What's your name?" He wanted to make the old she-cat feel more comfortable by talking to her. Obviously something was wrong or she would've devoured her share of rat the instant she laid eyes on it. At least, that's what Patchfur would've done if he hadn't eaten raat in who knows how long.

"Patchfur, meet Dottedfoot. She has not yet joined the experiment in official terms." Woodstripe paused to take a bite from the meat. "Do you know where Spiderstripe or Redstream are? We can bring her to them for approval. I am sure they would not object, should she request to join us. What say you, Dottedfoot? Are you interested in our test of life under a leader?"

Patchfur dipped his head respectfully to the elder. "Hello Dottedfoot," he meowed. "Unfortunately, I have no idea where they are, but why does it matter what they think? You're just as smart and capable of making decisions as they are. Don't wait for their permission; it's not as if they control your every pawstep. Besides, this entire experiment was your idea! You don't have to act like they're the only ones that can get anything done!" He had drawn himself up to his full height, which wasn't much, but at least it made him feel better. "You're not a kit anymore Woodstripe! They aren't your parents. Don't let them walk all over you!" Okay, maybe he was taking her comment a little too seriously, but he hadn't expected strong, persistent Woodstripe to submit to anyone.

Woodstripe's green eyes widened at the tom's little diatribe. It wasn't his distaste for authority that surprised her; it was the obvious point he had overlooked. She blinked and mewed, "Yes, the experiment was my idea... and the objective is to test the subordinate, unified lifestyle. If we do not treat Spiderstripe as leader, the experiment has no point and no value.
"I feel no shame, nor degradation, nor annoyance, in waiting for her word, and when she gives her word I will respect it. As a participant in the experiment, this is what I have pledged myself to do. In the case that you give no care for what Spiderstripe nor Redstream say, I hope you will wait until you encounter a significant disagreement before you set your mind on rebelling against the leaders to whom you chose to submit by joining."

"I don't understand what makes you feel like they're the only ones whose opinion is important! Sure, they're technically our leaders, but don't you hate feeling like less of a cat? Don't you hate feeling like they're superior? They aren't better than you in any way! You may have different skills than they do, but does that mean they're better? Does a bunch of cats raising their paws and saying 'You're leader,' suddenly make one cat better than all the others? Why is her opinion worth more than yours, so much more that you can't even make a decision by yourself? I understand that we're forced to do this because this is what the experiment is about, but what I can't understand is why a cat would choose to live this way! I won't rebel against them, since nobody else seems to care about being treated as if we are lesser, but believe me, if I didn't want to have some experience under a leader so others couldn't tell me I haven't tried it so I don't know how bad it is, I'd be out of here!" Bracing for a sensible retort from Woodstripe or a brainless one from Shortwhisker, he tried to create a counterargument to each, hoping he could finally make someone see sense.
Ooc: God, it is fun to play Patchfur. I love arguing!

"No, Patchfur, in answer to your questions: I do not hate the feeling of subordination. Any cat who cannot stand to follow is not fit to lead."
As Woodstripe was saying this, Shortwhisker had dropped into a crouch and was growling.
"Patience is a virtue," she continued.
That was the last sentence she finished before the tuxedo tom shouted, "SayonemorethingandI'llkillyou!"
