"Enclosure" and "edifice" sound so formal and fancy. We have a lot of characters who wouldn't speak like that, and even for those that do, I'd like to pick some alternative terms. I'm going to churn out a list of every synonym and quasi-synonym I can get my claws on, and then we can go through and eliminate ones we don't like or just sound wrong. However, try to keep as many as tolerable. Please make suggestions if you have them - in particular if you think none of these would work. abode
asylum arena building billet box cavern cage cairn camp
cell
chamber
container coop cote den
dungeon dwelling
harbor haven heap house
hutch
kennel lair
lodge precinct pocket
pyramid refuge residence rockpile
room sanctuary sector
setup shack shanty shed shelter structure
sty
stadium tomb trap
vault
villa
ziggurat
Okay, some... no, all of those seem adjectivin' weird. Still, some are worse than others. Thoughts? I suggest one person eliminate one per post, so that we get rid of the worst before we start compromising. Then again, maybe some of you like sticking to "enclosure" and "edifice".

'Stadium' and 'kennel' sound wierd - I can't imagine any cat using those words to describe the enclosure. x3

'Abode' sounds more like 'home' to me ... Not what I'd consider the enclosure to be, but then again, some cats might use that if they actually liked being in the enclosure itself.
'Sanctuary' might most probably be used by only an insane cat.
'Lodge'? That's just not it. o.o
And would cats know what a 'building' is?

I like 'pyramid' and 'box.' They describe the enclosure itself better.

Scratched out stadium, kennel, and lodge. Ducky, any on the list you object to? 'Sanctuary' might most probably be used by only an insane cat. Insane cats are the ones who want to get out. Some (sane) cats see the enclosure as better and safer than the unknown world outside. I was going to have a character who thought that before I trashed her. And would cats know what a 'building' is? Since they know their ancestors "built" the place, then yes, it follows they'd know it's a "building".

"ziggurat" --x *coughsumerianscough*
I suppose residence would be okay. Structure, perhaps? And I don't think enclosure is that fancy.

Caves go into the ground or a mountain, sort of the opposite. "ziggurat" --x *coughsumerianscough* Yeah... too outlandish, or are you okay with it? And I don't think enclosure is that fancy. It's too fancy for cats like Grimykit.

"It's too fancy for cats like Grimykit." --- And you think he'd use villa, vault, etc.?

No, not everything on the list, but maybe some. Anything you'd like to eliminate, Brain?
