As Blackfoot padded away from her apprentice and nephew, Barkpaw, she wondered, What shall I hunt today? She went over the list of possibilities in her mind: lizards she had caught frequently, and were very bland; crickets were too quick and small for her; a rat, perhaps.... She hadn't tasted real rat meat in quite a long time. So she decided to recruit a few cats to help her, as only an insane cat would dare hunt rats alone.

Patchfur noticed a she-cat wandering around. He was looking for someone to talk to , and not discuss views. Perhaps a hunt. Anything was better than walking in circles. "Hello," he called out in a friendly mew.

Blackfoot glanced in the direction of the greeting, and she saw an orange-and-white patched cat. "Hi," she responded. Maybe this cat would like to hunt rats with her. "I'd like to go on a rat hunt. Will you join me?" They still needed a few more cats for rat-hunting, but this was a start.

Patchfur's belly rumbled in response. He hadn't tasted rat meat in so long, he'd almost forgotten. The reality of it must be better than what he imagined it to be. He nodded enthusaistically. "I'd love to go on a rat hunt. I have hunted rat in ages. Oh, what's your name? Mine's Patchfur," he added.

Blackfoot nodded in acknowledgment. "I'm Blackfoot," she replied.

"Okay, Blackfoot. You seem like a good hunting partner. I think we should recruit more cats before starting, though. Have you ever hunted rat before?" He was curious about this she-cat. How experienced was she? Was she intelligent? Hopefully she was the kind of cat that didn't mind answering questions.

"Yes, I have," Blackfoot responded. She was delighted that Patchfur thought of her as "a good hunting partner". "Several times, in fact: I have an apprentice, you know."

"Really?" The tom was intrigued by this. He didn't know that anyone still followed the Clan way of having a kit mentored by someone other than their parents. "Who is it?"

"His name is Barkpaw," she responded. She chuckled silently at Patchfur's surprised expression. "He's my nephew."

"Oh, okay," Patchfur meowed with relief. While he did support the idea of a Clan, it was likely that anyone who still stuck to the old Clan ways was a dedicated Clanner. Those were the kinds of cats that didn't support his views at all, more so than even the Cons. He sighed, hoping some more cats showed up. "If some more cats don't come soon, I'm going to kill some rats on my own," he muttered impatiently. They were empty words, of course. Patchfur was not stupid or suicidal, and he had no intention of killing a rat without help.
