Some "warning them of the future would change the future" logic that they ignore half the time, maybe? Dunno. I was thinking about StarClan earlier - how long have the Clans existed? Even if it's just been a few generations, StarClan has got to be huge. Think about it.

Yeah, StarClan must be....geez, huge. And I'd like to know if any cats went to the Dark Forest before Mr. Zombie Horse came, or if it was invented for his enemies. (Well, I guess Clawface wasn't a big enemy of his, but he did do us the service of murdering Spottedsue (not that that did anything) and she was once a shallow love interest of his so that's the connection.)

I have to wonder if the Dark Forest was there before StarClan.

Chapter 24
Alternative Title: Come Gather 'Round the Fire(star)

Happily, she stretched in her nest, pushing against Hazelpaw's back with her hind paws.

"Get off!" Hazelpaw complained.

"Can't you smell it?"

Hazelpaw yawned. "Smell what?"

"It's warmer!"

Does Hollypaw apologize? Of course not; she's busy smelling the temperature.

Firestorm was grooming Sandstorm below Highledge.

What?

"They'll never let us go with them."

"But watch this hunting move!" Foxkit crouched down, sticking his tail in the air and wiggling his haunches. His lunged forward and landed on a leaf, pinning it to the ground.

Icekit's short whiskers quivered with amusement. "Next time we need leaves, I'm sure Brambleclaw will ask you to help!"

Icekit's not bad.

Hollypaw darted forward. "Can I go with them?" she asked Brambleclaw.

"You're going to the Gathering tonight," he meowed. "I want you to save your energy for that."

"But I've been asleep half the morning," she protested.

"You're half-starved, like the rest of the Clan," Brambleclaw told her. "Rest and eat today. You can hunt tomorrow."

"But Lionpaw's been hunting!" Hollypaw answered hotly. "It's not fair."

"Life isn't fair. Stay in camp."

Lionpaw and Hollypaw are both going to the Gathering. Why does Lionpaw get to hunt, but not Hollypaw?

Overhead, the great white moon made the hollow glow with silver light.

The moon can light it up, maybe, but make it glow?

Brackenfur sat beside them, tugging with his teeth at the fur between his claws.

Is fur that difficult to remove? This is fur stuck there from a fight, yes? Or is this some sort of personal grooming?

Lionpaw and Hollypaw start on their way to the Gathering and Malkin makes Ten sick.

The patrol pounded down the slope toward the lakeshore. Graystripe pulled ahead, clearly excited to be going to a Gathering whit his Clan once more. He glanced, eyes shining, at Millie, as she caught up with him. "Do you still think you made the right decision, coming with me to the Clan?"

"Wherever you are is the right place for me to be," Millie replied quietly.

She doesn't want to be anywhere without her mayyy-ann.

Did Ten mention she no longer has any respect for Graystripe?

Notice that this also means Malkin doesn't have any actual loyalty to ThunderClan.

Back to the storyline - they're at the Gathering and a fight breaks out.

A hiss and a yowl made Hollypaw jerk her head around. Fur and claws flew as Berrypaw leaped onto Owlpaw. The ShadowClan apprentice wrestled him over and pinned him to the ground, but Berrypaw slid sideways with a quick, clean jerk and unbalanced him.

...uh, what just happened? Erin Hunter makes Owlpaw sound like a rickety table, not a cat.

"Stop it!" Brambleclaw's fierce mew echoed around the trees. He raced to his apprentice and plucked him away from Owlpaw by his scruff.

How is it that Brambleclaw can lift a cat over six months old by his scruff? Even if Berrypaw's a runt, he should be bigger than a young kit. Didn't it mention somewhere that Berrypaw is larger than Lionpaw?

Why is Ten having such trouble imagining "Stop it!" as sounding fierce?

Berrypaw had been training for moons to be a ThunderClan warrior. And yet he wasn't truly Clanborn. He had been born in horseplace with Hazelpaw and Mousepaw, not in the hollow. Daisy had brought them to ThunderClan only to stop the Twolegs from taking them away.

Again, how old were the kits when humans tried to take them? Offspring are supposed to leave their parents at some point. Dimwit seems too much of a hovermom to understand that.

Blackstar's eyes grew thin and hostile.

Okay. Makes sense, right? Look what it says on the page before.

"Look at the way Blackstar is glaring at us!" she gulped. The ShadowClan leader was staring down at the ThunderClan cats through slitted eyes, his lips twitching as though he only just suppressed a snarl.

So his already thin and hostile eyes grew thin and hostile again on the next page? Was there some moment in which his eyes were not thin and hostile, such that they could regrow that way?

Blackstar glared at Firestar. "You have given a home to so many cats born outside the forest that you are weakening Clan blood," he accused. "Why else would StarClan let us suffer?" He stared accusingly at the ThunderClan leader, then let his gaze sweep over Stormfur, Brook, Berrypaw, and Millie.

Don't you love how he accuses and then he stares accusingly?

Now wait; hold the phone. Stormfur? He was born in the old forest. He's half-Clan, but he wasn't born in the mountains, horseplace, or wherever the heck Malkin was born. Where's Cloudtail? Blackstar should be glaring at him instead.

"Kittypets and outsiders!" Oakfur sneered.

"You are destroying the warrior code!" Owlpaw yowled.

Brambleclaw's pelt bristled, and Stormfur got to his paws, curling his lip in a snarl. But Firestar's fierce gaze flashed across the Clans, silencing them.

How come all he has to do is look around and everyone shuts up? To three fourths of the cats there, he deserves the respect of an enemy leader, nothing more. He should at least have to speak in order for them to quiet down. He's not that beloved and respected (not outside of his own Clan, anyway).

Interesting to note how Erin Hunter's demonizing of warrior blood advocates, paired with some fans' reactions, proves Truffaut right.

He glared at Blackstar. "You think fresh blood in the Clans will weaken us? A life without hardship would weaken us more."

In a way, he's right - getting used to an easy life will leave you unprepared for a hard one - but in a way, he's wrong. If low prey and deadly disease assault a Clan, that Clan isn't going to be at its strongest.

His daughter has a suggestion.

"We should meet," Squirrelflight pressed, "to share skills and training methods. To show that we have not forgotten the Great Journey that brought us here, when the warrior code protected us as one."

"We could have contests!" For the first time Pebblepaw spoke. The RiverClan apprentice's eyes were shining with enthusiasm.

"The apprentices from each Clan could compete against one another to see who has the best skills!" Heatherpaw called out.

...Kitty Olympics?

On the next page Hollypaw is "suddenly" uneasy.

Cinderpaw came hurtling up beside them as they neared the fallen tree. "I bet Lionpaw wins the hunting," she panted.

Lionpaw purred self-consciously. "Well, Hollypaw will win the fighting," he mewed.

Brook's quiet voice sounded behind them. "As long as you all try your best, your Clan will be proud of you."

Oh shut up, Brook. Go back to your mountains.

She does, two books later. Once I'm done with Eclipse, I'll go back in time and do journals of Outcast, when she returns.

Well, as it turns out she didn't leave of her own free will. It's a long story. She'd still be there if it weren't for Stormfur, though.

Actually, that's true. At her old Tribe she's not very popular right then in The Sight.

That's why Leopardstar kicked her and Stormfur out- because no one liked her.

More because Brook wasn't doing too well at living in a Clan, but that too.
