I've just bought another two-month old lovebird that I've named Dusky for a science fair experiment. My first bird was killed by my dog a couple days ago, which makes me sound like a horrible pet owner. :c I've looked around the internet for information on caring for lovebirds, and all the sites say that I should start socializing with my bird right away. Except the pet store owner told me to leave Dusky alone for a day or two to get her used to her new surroundings. Dusky is really skittish right now, though. I got her yesterday and she flutters away with frantic 'cheeps' when I put my hands or face close to the cage. Does anyone have any tips on how to calm Dusky down?

I'm afraid I'm not a bird expert or even a bird owner, but I've decided to post. How long has Dusky been living with you? If she's really new, she might need more time getting used to her surroundings before she starts making new friends.
I know birds aren't the same as cats, but when I got my first kitten, for a long time (don't remember how long it lasted, sorry) she hid from me each time she heard me coming. She had a new home she wasn't comfortable with, and when she can't feel safe about that, she can't feel safe about new creatures.
With Dusky it's likely the same thing. Time should help. I'm thinking keeping your distance for a while is best, and then in gradual increments spend time closer and closer to the cage until she doesn't mind you being next to it. Just a theory.

Well, when I got my bird, he didn't want to come out of his cage and he didn't want me to come near. Maybe you should try to get him used to the sound of your voice. Sit down so that you don't tower over his cage and read to him. That might calm him down.

Thanks, guys. I've tried both of your suggestions and they seem to work. Well, almost. Dusky still is rather shy, but I think that'll pass sooner or later. :3
