Woodstripe raised her eyebrows. "It seems so, Spiderpaw."
She had never expected any cats to be so brazen as to nominate themselves, but now that Batkit had brought her into the arena - even if he didn't mean it - she wasn't complaining.
"Batkit, I am honored that you would hold me in a high enough regard for my name to arrive on your tongue." Still facing him, she spoke to the group for a moment, "I know many of you have your own aspirations and reservations, but this young tom is an innocent one, free of troubled mind or dogmatic judgment. How old are you, Batkit? You seem to have outgrown your name; perhaps you are worthy of a new one. You have trained in the ways of a warrior, have you not?"

Ooc: /Is/ Batkit young and innocent? I don't know how old he is, but I was always under the impression that he just kept his kit name.
Patchfur didn't know who he'd rather have as deputy- Woodstripe or Rockpelt. Both seemed like bad choices, but he was sure that once Woodstripe put her name up there, every single cat would be voting for her. Bronzefoot didn't have a chance. "Well, he's obviously learned how to hunt and fight, or he'd be dead by now. So I think he has trained as a warrior."

"Um... lemme' think for a moment..." Batkit paused, then meowed, "Almost two whole seasons! Hey, wait a minute... am I turning into an apprentice? Or a warrior? Ya-hooey!" He spun around and chased his tail with excitement. "I trained a little with my mama, so I can fight a bit and hunt lizards and crickets and once I helped catch a rat! I only got to nip it's leg, though, before my sister killed it."

Rockpelt was about to answer Patchfur's and Dingypaw's questions, when the subject of Batkit came up. "Hold on," he mewed, "if any cat is becoming a warrior, shouldn't Spiderpaw give him his name?" He dipped his gray head respectfully to the newly-elected leader.

Woodstripe nodded. "Yes, of course - it is Spiderpaw's honor, as tradition grants. Speaking of tradition, however, it also stipulates that a warrior have mentored an apprentice before becoming deputy. Out of curiosity, have any of you been a mentor before?"

Patchfur paused and shook his head. He hadn't been a mentor, and he was sure no one else had. "What if no one's been a mentor? Then who will be deputy?" the tom asked, flicking his tail back and forth anxiously.

OOC>> I would think that that would have been forgotten with the rest of the warrior code.
Rockpelt frowned. He had forgotten about that tradition. "If none of us have ever mentored an apprentice," he mewed, "then we will have to postpone that tradition until the deputy can find an apprentice to mentor." He looked around, hoping other cats would agree with him.

ooc| They forgot StarClan, not the warrior code.

"I asked out of mere curiosity, Patchfur. I do not consider it a requirement. Like many old traditions, it makes sense but does not fit modern circumstances."

"Perhaps it may fit future circumstances," Rockpelt mused. It sounded like a good idea: the cats in charge should have experience leading other cats. But back to the present subject: "If we are going to do this, we should start now."

Truthfully, Patchfur hadn't seen Batkit hunt or fight, so he didn't know what skill level the tom was at. The general idea seemed to be that he'd be a warrior, but he didn't know if he was old enough. He stood up, shook off his fur, and started pacing, flicking his tail back and forth as he thought. "Is two seasons old enough to be a warrior? I don't know what the minimum age is."
A faint smile appeared on Dingypaw's face as she watched Batkit leap and run enthusiastically. Her spirit lifted when she saw him bounce around; it made her feel younger, more energized. She began to clean her fur for the first time in seasons, thinking that she should start the experiment with a clean pelt. After all, she wouldn't have to be scrounging around for food. Turning her attention back to Batkit, her usually dull eyes lit up. "I think he should become a warrior regardless of age. Any cat that can learn to hunt and fight and survive here for two seasons deserves the title," she meowed.
