"Sounds like something Shortwhisker would say." -- ...mm, all my characters have exaggerations of my own personal traits. I'm not as stupid and emotional and extremist as he is, of course, but I can relate to his desire for security.
"Naw, the evil govenment's going to give you cookies and cake!" -- Exactamundo. It's a conspiracy. They want to sell us overpriced weight-loss medication and dental plans. See? Now that's worth reading about. Real evil doesn't jump out at your face. It hides in plain sight.
"But I'm not going to force you to read it." -- Don't be absurd. There's no forcing anyone to do anything except by torture. I'll keep your recommendation in mind.
"Somehow, I'm not at all surprised to hear you say that, Ten..." -- -sheepish grin-
"Fine then, what are some 'books that you enjoy?'" -- Well, like I said, Jane Eyre and Shackleton's Stowaway... -rummages through bookstacks- mm... Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson has some excellent writing. Oh, and I think I liked Wolf Tower by Tanith Lee, but that was a while ago.
Also, I'm fond of dictionaries.
edit: How could I forget? The Best of Enemies by Suzanne Pierson Ellison is a bit of a children's book, but it's hilarious. Maybe part of the reason I found it so funny is that every time a Texan character spoke, the author emphasized that they spoke with a drawl. I burst out laughing when I read a scene in which a character "...drawled darkly." I tend to associate drawls with lighthearted stupidity.
Plus I've read a little bit of Shakespeare as well as the story of Oedipus; enjoyed those.

Yeah, same here. But sometimes I make up characters that are nothing like me just for fun.
---x---
Exactamundo. It's a conspiracy. They want to sell us overpriced weight-loss medication and dental plans. See? Now that's worth reading about. Real evil doesn't jump out at your face. It hides in plain sight. ---x---
They make money off of fast food, and then even more money off of weight-loss solutions!
---x---
Don't be absurd. There's no forcing anyone to do anything except by torture. I'll keep your recommendation in mind.
---x---
Ever seen a twitard? They're quite good at forcing people to read Twilight.
---x--- Well, like I said, Jane Eyre and Shackleton's Stowaway... -rummages through bookstacks- mm... Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson has some excellent writing. Oh, and I think I liked Wolf Tower by Tanith Lee, but that was a while ago. ---x---
Wow, I've never read any of those. Thanks for making me feel dumb. Again. (Just kidding)
---x---
Also, I'm fond of dictionaries.
---x---
I never would've guessed... There was a Texan in The Golden Compass. Lee Scoresby, I think. He was pretty awesome. In fact, so was that entire series.

"But sometimes I make up characters that are nothing like me just for fun." -- They must have some smidge of you in them; otherwise you would not be able to relate to them. You might not know what or where, but it's there.
"Ever seen a twitard?" -- Yes.
"They're quite good at forcing people to read Twilight." -- They can't force people to do anything. Only pressure. I'd like to see one have a go at a particular girl I know.
"Wow, I've never read any of those." -- My tastes tend to be unpopular.
"There was a Texan in The Golden Compass." -- I bet there was a character with pale skin, too, and a character who is a girl, and a character with toes. I don't plan on reading it.

I never said I wanted you to read it. I was just saying...

"I think you always have a point." -- Aw, shucks.
"In fact, you should be in debate club." -- Maybe if I didn't stutter so much and slur my words and screw up what I'm trying to say and hesitate at key moments and blurt out stupid things and otherwise exhibit poor speaking habits.
"I was just saying..." -- Considering this is a forum, can you do more than say?
Oh, a few moments ago I was at the bookstore and saw a book about a vampire support group. It was interesting, all the more so in contrast to Twilight, but I didn't buy it. Not sure why I didn't like it more... maybe it was the bratty main character.

It doesn't matter. I bet you could be the best debater ever if you pretended you were on the internet, arguing with some idiot who thought Sparkleshine was a good name.
---x---
Considering this is a forum, can you do more than say?
---x---
What I meant was that I wasn't trying to get you to read it. I just say whatever comes into my mind, even if it's stupid.

Bratty main characters are almost as annoying as Mary-Sues. Almost, but the sues still win.

"I bet you could be the best debater ever if you pretended you were on the internet, arguing with some idiot who thought Sparkleshine was a good name." -- Most things aren't that easy.
"Bratty main characters are almost as annoying as Mary-Sues." -- I think the author was trying to make her spunky and fiery and independant and all that. She just seemed annoying.

I have problems with public speaking, too. Luckily, I've never had to do it. But I get nervous even when I hear about someone else having to. I'm afraid everyone will laugh at me...

I'm afraid everyone will laugh at me... --- That's a common fear. ^^ I feel nervous whenever I do public speaking too, but once I start speaking it comes pretty easy. I don't share my classmates' local accents - I've been told I sound as though I'm European. But I look Korean.
Fact is, though, that I'm actually Singaporean. =O I should learn to speak Korean so I can go hide in Korea if anything happens to Singapore.

Well, I might be okay with talking in front of the class, but talking in front of the whole school is a differen thing entirely.
