books, movies, tv shows, stories in general...
What do you like? What types of characters? What sort of villains? What plot points? The cute little animal sidekick?
What do you dislike? The Good Guys Are Good-Looking cliche? The Damsel in Distress cliche? The Evil Monologue cliche? Predictability? Unpredictability? The cute little animal sidekick?
And I'm not just trying to generate discussion for the sake of discussion here. I'm interested in what y'all have to say.

The cute little animal sidekick shall forever be win.
What I hate the most are Evil Monologue cliches and Predictability. Sadly, these two things have been recognised in the general media as being the best way to do it, so we don't have many nice cartoons anymore. =/

"The cute little animal sidekick shall forever be win." -- The ones in Aladdin, Enchanted, and The Little Mermaid got on my nerves, but I can't remember any others.
"Sadly, these two things have been recognised in the general media as being the best way to do it" -- -shrug- People are lazy.
Anyway, I seem to lack most people's ability to predict things, so I'm able to watch cop shows and still enjoy myself.

I hate the Damsel in Distress cliche. It is so annoying. Why can the princess (or the Bella) not save themselves? I like heros and villains, depending on what the individual characters are like. My favorite are the smart ones, the villains who always twist the plot in a way you didn't expect. I also dislike when the good guys are Gary/Mary stus/sues. In fact, I dislike Mary/Gary stus/sues altogether. That's why Suzanne Collins is my favorite author. In all six books I've read that she's written, there has not been one mary-sue or even a borderline sue. The villain /can/ be a borderline sue ( a character that's almost a mary-sue but not quite) because that makes it harder for the heros to beat them and makes the book or show that much more exciting. If the cute animal sidekick happens to be a bird, they automatically win.

I read a few pages of that book of hers, The Hunger Games. I was put off by how many times I've seen that idea done over and over again.

I read a few pages of that book of hers, The Hunger Games. I was put off by how many times I've seen that idea done over and over again. ---X--- The first few pages are dull. Once you get into it, though, it's impossible to put it down. 0_o Really? You've seen a plot with all those elements combined into one tons of times? Where? What book? I loved it to death. It's my favorite book. What I liked about it was that it had pretty much everything. Something for everyone. Plus the total and complete absence of Mary-Sues. Romance, action, drama, fighting, suspense, etc. I can't wait for the second one to come out! In my opinion, it was really good. But if you don't like, I'm not going to be a twitard and shove it at you and force you to read it. There are books I've read that are better-written, but the plot wasn't as good, in my opinion. Unlike you, this is the first time I've seen a plot like that. Plus, the books I've read that were better-written usually had a Mary-Sue, or at least a borderline sue. What's your favorite book, Ten?

"You've seen a plot with all those elements" --
Just the totalitarian government thing. People overdo it to death.
I'm more concerned about a lack of control than too much control.
"Romance, action, drama, fighting, suspense," -- You sound like the grandpa in The Princess Bride.
"In my opinion, it was really good." -- Rolo said something similar. I might give it another look.
"What's your favorite book, Ten?" -- Fiction? oi, ya lahwy... I don't know. There are a few books that I like, such as Jane Eyre and Shackleton's Stowaway, but I don't think I have a favorite. I'm too critical for that.

Jane Eyre seems to be a lovely book. =D I should get around to reading it. And The Hunger Games, too. My friend's been recommending it to me constantly. xD She really loves it, it seems.
"Just the totalitarian government thing. People overdo it to death." When it's explored creatively and not overdone though, it can turn out pretty cool. =D
" I don't know." No favourite book? =O ... Me neither. xD How about your top five favourites, in no specific order? 83 That always works better for me.

"When it's explored creatively" -- I don't see how anyone would be able to do that. Totalitarian is totalitarian, meaning it's obligatory that most of the book be a bunch of "woeeee is me, the eeeeevil government causes me to sufferrrrr."
"How about your top five favourites, in no specific order?" -- I can't do that either. I don't have "favorites" because no book ever meets my full approval. There are only "books that I enjoy".

I'm more concerned about a lack of control than too much control. ---x--- Sounds like something Shortwhisker would say.
---x--- You sound like the grandpa in The Princess Bride.
---x--- I didn't realize that until now.
---x--- I don't see how anyone would be able to do that. Totalitarian is totalitarian, meaning it's obligatory that most of the book be a bunch of "woeeee is me, the eeeeevil government causes me to sufferrrrr." ---x--- Naw, the evil govenment's going to give you cookies and cake! Really, though, it's good. But I'm not going to force you to read it.
---x---
I don't have "favorites" because no book ever meets my full approval.
---x---
Somehow, I'm not at all surprised to hear you say that, Ten... Fine then, what are some "books that you enjoy?"
