Sensibility is required. However, the names don't have to be as honorable as they would elsewhere. The cats are in a dark place, in a literal and emotional sense, so a little gloom is acceptable.

Note: many of the restrictions and allowances are due to the nature of the setting and plot.
Not Allowed:
- renames
- memorial names
- self-naming
- names based on circumstances of birth
- names based on small/minor amounts of fur color
- fire, plants, birds, or the anything in sky
- song, gaze, pool, fall, cry, soul, spirit, or eye
Allowed:
- stone as a suffix
- "emo" sounding names (like Shadowheart and Weakwhisker)
as long as they make sense - names used in the books, as long as they conform to reason
as well as the other rules

The Formula:
A name tends to work when either
the cat has a suffix that looks like the prefix,
the cat looks like the prefix and is skilled with the suffix,
or the cat looks like the prefix and has a suffix-y personality.
