A discussion like the Geeks and Nerds thread. How do you distinguish between hicks and rednecks? The stereotypes (stereotypes, as in not always true) have a lot in common: rural life, hunting, fishing, camo, denim, guns, dogs, beer, ignorance, ultraconservative-ness, etc. Rednecks, however, are also associated with mullets, NASCAR, duct tape, marrying their cousins, beating wives, blatant racism, etc. I'm thinking that "redneck" is a harsher and more specific term, whereas "hick" just refers to folks who "live out in the sticks" (and a "hillbilly" is a hick in Appalachia).

Ten, I love you forest for this, but you forgot that they talk usin' horrible grammar. Just sayin'.
There is some by group of idiots who call themselves rednecks at my school. All they do is wear camo and boots (and some of them might be in a relationship with their cousin). I assure you they're going off the steryotype, considering the closets farm is probably way outside my school zone. Or maybe not, our school zones are odd. Back on topic, I really don't think or classify people as hicks because the term really doesn't come up a lot, and I'm sure the "rednecks" would be offended to be called a hick. /gigglefit

"Ten, I love you forest for this, but you forgot that they talk usin' horrible grammar. Just sayin'." -- Right, right. Poor education is part of it, too. Sort of falls under ignorance.

When I was in middle school, there was one guy who fancied himself a redneck, but I was like, no man, rednecks don't go to private schools with khaki-trouser uniforms.
"Back on topic, I really don't think or classify people as hicks because the term really doesn't come up a lot," -- What do you mean?

Ahahaha, this is right up my alley since I live in West Virginia. At my schools where you have the stereotype preps, jocks, nerds, geeks, burnouts, etc. we have a redneck genre. They're... scary, to say the least, and yell too much.
I tend to think of hicks to be more well-mannered than rednecks and just live out farther and may not be accustomed to things we have in modern society. In WV, that's the southern counties where I'm told the annual Roadkill Barbeque Festival is quite popular. Yes, it's real. But for the most part I think that hicks are just secluded.
Rednecks are, and excuse me if the word offends anyone, "white trash". They're racist, ignornat, stupid, easily excited, drink and smoke at school, and think they're really cool when they wear designer knock-offs. They yell at each other and skip class, and randomly attack each other. And like Draco said, they wear a lot of cameo. The rednecks at my school also seem to love work boots and cowboy boots. NASCAR is pretty popular among them. But as much as I dislike them, I also feel bad for them. A lot of them have horrible home lives, absolutely terrible home lives, and I wish I could help them somehow. :/

"At my schools where you have the stereotype preps, jocks, nerds, geeks, burnouts, etc. we have a redneck genre." -- Same. They wear boots to school (and I have boots too, but those are for horse work, and I wouldn't wear those filthy things in school when I don't need them) and I've seen them trying to rope each other in the hallway.
"In WV, that's the southern counties where I'm told the annual Roadkill Barbeque Festival is quite popular. Yes, it's real." -- o-o
"But as much as I dislike them, I also feel bad for them. A lot of them have horrible home lives, absolutely terrible home lives, and I wish I could help them somehow." -- Aww.
I think you're right in how you make the distinction, though. Redneck is much more negative than hick. Not that hick is a nice thing to call someone either, but it's about on par with nerd, methinks.

Blehk. And I'm a naive person... what does rope mean?
Yeah, redneck is pretty bad. Hick isn't as bad... to tell you the truth, some of the hicks I know are more like southern gentlemen in their own quirky ways.

"Blehk. And I'm a naive person... what does rope mean?" -- What it sounds like, haha. They sometimes bring a lariat to school (yeah, I don't know, maybe there's a 4H meeting right after school?) and make a lasso, then throw it to try and catch someone during a passing period.
"Yeah, redneck is pretty bad. Hick isn't as bad... to tell you the truth, some of the hicks I know are more like southern gentlemen in their own quirky ways." -- mmm, Southern gentlemen. That stereotype is a lot classier, though. Hicks are more the... uneducated commoner version, if you will.

o-o..... I had actually originally typed asking if it was a lasso but then deleted it because I didn't want to sound stupid. But they seriously lasso each other? That's so funny! That's so much better than my school. Here they just throw bottles at each other.

Yes, Southern gentlemen isn't what they are completly. But in my experiences hicks are as gallant and curteous as a gentleman, even if it was only extended to women. But then again, I was probably just lucky when I met them. ^^
