Shortwhisker snorted. "Th-that d-doesn't even m-make any s-sense! L-leading th-the hunt d-doesn't p-prove sh-she's equal! B-besides, as l-long as sh-she's l-l-lead-der, w-we're n-not equals."

Patchfur rolled his eyes and forced himself to keep his claws sheathed. "Yes, it does. A leader who thought themselves better than the others wouldn't do something as mundane as hunting. They would think themselves too good for such tasks. I suggested that she lead the hunt because she has leadership skills and would know how to best organize us." He didn't bring up the 'leader is equal' argument with Shortwhisker, as he knew he would only eventually lose his temper.

Speckledclaw was rather disheartened at the fact that Patchfur was pushing Spiderpaw to take over the hunt, but the Experiment would last quite a while. it was fine to let her take over just this once.

Either way, she wanted to see for herself how good the she-cat's leadership skills during a hunt were. "I'm fine if you'd like to lead the hunt. I'm rather intrigued myself to see how good of a hunter ye are."

Spiderstripe shrugged. "I guess the majority wants me to lead the hunt," she meowed. At least this would stop Patchfur bugging her - hopefully. She turned and looked out to where the rats were mingling, imagining the taste of meat.

"Let's find ourselves some rat."

"Yes! L-let's d-do it!" Stoked, Shortwhisker clawed the ground and whipped his head around, trying to find the best rat and be the first to point it out. He'd love to have something to rub in Patchfur's face, plus he might even impress Spiderstripe. The thought made his heart pound. He had to be quick. "Th-that one! L-let's k-kill that o-one!" the tom shouted before even giving it a real look.

Patchfur looked over at the rat Shortwhisker had pointed out, hoping that it was a stupid choice. He'd love to be able to laugh in his face about it, and look good in front of the other cats, making Shortwhisker appear the incompetent one. He noticed that it was a huge male, towering over the rest of the rodents. It was strong and sleek, the epitome of health, what every rat yearned to be. Large teeth, capable of delivering a rather painful bite, were clearly visible as the feeble light glinted off them. If he had to choose a rat to tangle with, this would be the last one on his list. "Alright, fine. You can go try and hunt the most dangerous rat in the enclosure, but don't come yowling to me when you get bitten in half. I suggest that one," Patchfur replied, nodding his head in the general direction of a different rat. This one wasn't small, certainly large enough to feed the four of them, but it was radically different from the first one. It was wounded, as if it had been in a fight, congealed blood stuck on the mangy fur of its black leg. Healthy, it would've been a challenge, but the puncture in its leg would slow it down. "I think it would be an easier one to catch," he meowed, forcing the smug smile off his face.

"Definitely," Speckledclaw nodded at Patchfur, after quickly examining the two rats. "There's much less risk involved in tackling a rat that's hurt, and this is particularly good call - it's pretty darn big." She turned expectantly to Spiderstripe for following instructions, even though she was itching to take control of the hunt inside.

Barkpaw hadn't really been conversing with the older cats very much; rather, he was wondering how Blackfoot was doing. He wasn't that worried now, since he was sure that her wound was cleaned, but had she gotten anything to eat? She had told him she had gone hunting, but didn't seem like she'd eaten any of the catch if she caught anything. He was also thinking about Redstream. He terribly wanted to impress her, to share some of the kill with her. But now with his aunt...

He was jostled out of his thoughts when Patchfur chose a rat. He noticed it was rather large, but was wounded. If they managed to kill it, it might prove to be enough meat to quell both of his worries and hopes. The tom nodded, agreeing with the choice. Then he waited for Spiderstripe's signal, as she seemed to have taken charge of the hunt.

On another note - this post feels rather awkward, which is probably because I've tended to avoid rat hunts in favor of debates.

Spiderstripe appraised the rats. "Nice find, Patchfur," she meowed. "I agree. It will be easier to take down, and will make good meat." She felt a little nervous - not only at being the leader of the entire experiment, but about something smaller: she had never led a rat hunt before. But this was the first rat hunt in the Experiment, and she wouldn't have to lead them all. Her eyes trained on the rat they had chosen, she meowed, "Let's go."
