"I'm joining Dullpaw's Clan," she meowed innocently. Though Dullpaw couldn't see it, she smirked in Shadowpaw's direction so the apprentice could tell that she wasn't serious about this. "I really needed a new place to live. And Dullpaw is a very intelligent leader." She couldn't resist that last sentence, though it was hard to say with a straight face. Luckily, only Shadowpaw was able to see her face twitching as she fought to control her laughter. Dullpaw probably wouldn't know what it meant anyways.

"Oho! Now, wha' brings a lil tough-lookin' fella like ya ova' here?" Dullpaw looked approvingly over Shadowpaw's build. She may not be a big, muscular tom, like what he had wanted, but she wasn't too old or young. "Yup, listen to yer elda' here. I'm Dullpaw, and this is meh terr'tory. Ya gotta choice; eitha' join meh Clan or scram 'fore I bite yer tail off. So what is it, sweetheart?"

Shadowpaw considered joining his Clan for a moment, then realized that her mentor was a con and there was no way she could be Beetlepaw's apprentice and join a Clan. But she wasn't listening to any "leader" that still had his apprentice suffix. "I'm not on your territory," she taunted, putting her forepaws right behind the line.

Dingypaw smirked at the exchange going on between the two cats. Shadowpaw was probably a hundred times smarter than Dullpaw (though that wasn't really a compliment) and would obviously outwit him. She couldn't wait to see this, so no escaping yet. "I think you should leave her alone. If she's not on your territory she's not doing any harm, right?"

Dullpaw looked slightly disgruntled at Shadowpaw's remark and huffed. But to cover up his annoyance, he meowed, "Wull... I meant that as a warnin', so beware!" After a moment or two of thought, he added hastily, "But still, ya should really join, 'cause it doesn't look like yer feedin' yerself right, eh? Now, if ya join meh Clan, ya can get high-qual'ty food. An' ya can serve yer leada' propa'ly, yessiree."
Turning his head toward Dingypaw, he hissed, "None of yer beeswax 'bout what I do or say, ya hear meh?"

"But Dullpaw," she pleaded. "Elders are supposed to give advice and help the leader make decisions. Because we're old, we've seen more and we can help you make decisions that are good for the Clan. If I didn't give you advice, I would be a failure as an elder."

Shadowpaw was enjoying Dullpaw's reaction. "I need food?" she asked, walking along the line. "And where's you're fresh-kill pile? All I see is the Boneyard. Except smaller!"

"'Kay, yeah. Jus' keep quiet fer now. An' that's a fresh pile of prey! Not a freakin' Boneya'd, yessir." Dullpaw shook his head and looked down at Shadowpaw, his expression appropriate for haughty king. "Wull, eat up, we're goin' huntin' righ' now." He jumped down, landing with a heavy thump.

Dingypaw sighed and climbed to her feet wearily. She stretched a little, then looked over at Shadowpaw. "What do you say? Want to come with us?" She didn't think she could make it very far, but she didn't think Dullpaw would care.

"'Bye," Shadowkit said. She erased part of the border with her tail and ran for it. At that speed, Dullpaw probably couldn't keep up.
