A tiny crack of light shone onto Slatefoot's forepaw, though he could easily do without a little brightness in the stuffy enclosure. Perspiration dampened his gray pelt and his tongue lolled from his mouth. In fact, he was too tired and hot to even lick his dusty flank.
And so he slumped on the floor and lay there, his eyelids half-closed. He looked like a large bundle of fur from a distance, but if a cat were to stumble by and anger him, they would clearly see that he was not. A cricket chirruped; he ignored it and turned his attention on the shaft of light filtering from the wall.

The sun beat down on Rainstripe's long striped fur as she searched for prey. Her breathing was shallow and fast, as if she had just chased down a particularly speedy lizard. Though she wished that were the case, she hadn't eaten in a while and she was getting tired. So tired that she could barely put one paw in front of the other. Her yellow-green eyes focused on the nearby wall, and she wasn't watching where she was going. Suddenly, she was falling, her large paws having caught on something. Rainstripe yowled loudly and leaped away from the object she had tripped over and landed on. It looked to be furry, and was quite large so it was obviously a cat, but that didn't stop her striped fur from bristling.

Slatefoot's head jerked up, swiveling around to search for the cause of his now-ruffled fur. It was a cat... not much of a surprise, but it didn't soothe his temper. "Watch it," he growled, narrowing his eyes at the tabby. However, his voice wasn't too hostile; who'd want to fight in these conditions?

"I-I," she stuttered, eyes wide with fear. "I was just looking for some food, but it's so hot..." her voice trailed off as she slumped down onto the sand. That was probably the longest speech she'd ever made to a complete stranger, but she felt like she had to explain herself somehow. Although she had a feeling that this cat wouldn't care if she didn't. Her stomach growled, angry at the lack of food, but Rainstripe didn't have the energy to chase after a lizard or a bug. "If only Frozenheart and Beetlepaw were here. Then we could catch a rat," she muttered to herself.

Rainstripe must have said the magic words because instead of rearing up to claw her, the tom's eyes flickered with a new interest. "A rat?" Then he looked wary, his expression guarded. "Who's this Frozenheart and Beetlepaw£¿"
Too bad he didn't know the name of the cat who had thrown him that rat carcass with a disgusted look on his face.

Rainstripe froze up when the strange cat started talking to her. Unless it was a debate about Clans and one of her few friends was around, she didn't talk to strangers at all. "M-my friends," she stuttered, backing away a few steps in case he thought she was a threat. After all, you never could tell with strangers.

"Hmm..." Slatefoot furrowed his brows and didn't speak for some time. He wanted to sink his fangs into a delicious rat and let the taste of fresh meat fill his jaws, but he had to be cautious. His stomach, however, was large, and if it didn't get another meal soon, it would start growling until a deaf kit on the other side of the enclosure could hear it.
Yes, he was exaggerating, but a fat rodent would definitely do him good.
"Is Frozenheart or Beetlepaw around here right now?" he asked, surprising himself by speaking so calmly to a total stranger. Not to mention a timid she-cat that had nearly trampled him. Just finding one of them would be perfect. More cats meant easier hunting, but that also meant more bellies to fill.

"Uh, no?" she meowed, backing away. She was hungry, but not hungry enough to hunt alongside a stranger. If Frozenheart or Beetlepaw was here, they could hunt a rat, but they weren't. The tom was quite calm for someone she'd just tripped over, which made her suspicious.

She seemed albeit nervous. And hey, wait! Frozenheart and Beetlepaw were her friends?
That meant she could be only one thing.
"Oh, get lost. You're probably just some stupid Clanner. This place is swarming with those bumbling idiots now."

"I'm no Clanner!" she meowed angrily, feeling insulted. "I'm a con! And Beetlepaw and Frozenheart are cons too!" At first she wanted to tell him about the rebellion, but decided against it. She really didn't know how to explain it, and besides, he was a stranger and none of her friends were here.
