Patchfur sighed. "Well, again, I said I'd participate in your dumb experiment, so it's not like it matters whether or not I believe your lies," he meowed. "I know you're telling the truth about your talk with the other cats, but I'm pretty sure you set this all up so you could see what it was like to be leader. At least it's only 7 days long."

Batkit inclined his head toward Woodstripe, though he could tell that the other tom wasn't reassured. He remained silent after that, until he felt that he should speak.
The gray tabby looked at Patchfur and meowed quietly, "No, that's not true. Leaders care about their Clan, too."

Patchfur snorted skeptically. "If they /really/ cared about their Clan, they wouldn't control every aspect of their lives. It's going to be hard or me to give up my freedom, but if it gives me more evidence to use in arguments, I'll do it." He would miss hunting when he wanted, sleeping where and when he wanted, fighting who and when he wanted, basically doing what he wanted, when he wanted to do it. That wouldn't be an option once he was trapped in Woodstripe's claws.

ooc| While I understand Patchfur's mistrust of leaders, why does Patchfur think that Woodstripe wants to be leader? He's right, of course, but I'm wondering what tipped him off.

"You are making an honorable sacrifice," Woodstripe mewed, "though I must say you are being somewhat melodramatic. You say a leader controls every aspect of each Clan cat's life. This is not so. A leader does not control what they name their kits, or for that matter, who they mate with."

Ooc: Basically, the way she seemed to be leading the other two. The fact that she speaks without contractions. (that seems really leaderlike to me for some reason) The fact that she was the one who introduced herself first, and spoke very formally. And also, the fact that she is the only one old enough to lead a clan in the first place. XD
Bic: "Yes, but think about these questions for me. Does a leader control where a cat sleeps? Yes. Granted, this is a minor thing, but there's no real reason for all the cats to have to sleep together. Who trains them? Yes. This is a much more important decision, and I don't think leaders should be the ones to make it. They don't know the kit at all, usually. The parents, who know the kit's personality, should decide this, as they would be able to choose a mentor that would work well with that particular kit. Whether they hunt or patrol the borders? Yes. Again, the leaders have no business making these decisions. Talented hunters should go on hunting patrols, and talented fighters should patrol the borders. However, leaders don't know the skills of every warrior, so they may send a good fighter out hunting, or a good hunter patrolling, and it would not go well. They even get to choose the next leader! How can a leader possibly know every cat well enough to make that decision? Plus, why should a leader get all the power in the first place, hm? Is it because everyone thinks they're better than everyone else? Is it because they don't want the cats to make their own decisions? Do they think they know each warrior better than the warriors themselves?!" Patchfur was getting angry now, but he inhaled deeply and calmly, and regained his composure. "All I'm saying is it better be worth it," he mumbled.

Spiderpaw sighed. "No real reason for all the cats to have to sleep together? It's cold at night." She paused for a minute. "Now, we have our parents choose our mentors, if our parents are alive-and sometimes our parents are our mentors. Now, there is such a thing as a parent being too easy on their kit, so perhaps a cat unrelated to the family should train the kits, but do we have to keep up the policy of leaders choosing who mentors who? No. Not if the general populace doesn't think so." She paused. "Hunting is almost exactly like fighting when you're dealing with rats, and what's this about borders?"
"Besides, I was under the impression that everyone voted on major things such as a leader-what's this about the leader choosing the next leader?" Spiderpaw actually did know about the whole deputy thing, but she thought it best to have him explain completely so that she could find where he was wrong. "About that last part of what you said: You're stereotyping leaders. You've never even met a leader, because we don't have one, so how would you know that they don't want the cats to make their own decisions?"

"In our territory, maybe, but what if it's warm at night. And hunting rats is different from fighting. Rats are not as strong as cats, and can be beaten with hunting skill. And there are more types of prey besides rats. My parents told me that the leader chooses the deputy. Essentially, the leader is choosing the next leader. For the last part, I'm just trying to think of reasons why cats think only one or two cats deserves power. Why can't we share it? We share prey, sleeping quarters, territory, duties - why is power so different?" Patchfur asked.

"The fact that she speaks without contractions." -- Now I'm elated that you noticed that.

"Seeing as there is no one who says otherwise, please understand, any previous Clan policies may be altered or removed once the new Clan is created. For instance, I would suggest that female leaders be permitted to have mates, as the law forbidding this is what destroyed RiverClan.
"The leader's role requires an intimate knowledge of the Clan and its members, so whenever the leader was not tending to hunting arrangements and other duties, he or she would spend their time getting to know each and every clanmate. It is necessary for the position.
"And, inversely, the position is necessary. This is not because one cat has a higher value than others. This is because direction and authority are what makes a group strong and effective. From my observations, there are nearly always one or two cats who take the presiding role during a rat hunt. The centralization of decisions is how better decisions are made," she declared.
Woodstripe then gave Patchfur an amused look as she added, "And what is this about nights being warm?"

Ooc: I notice stuff like that. I'll be reading a book and then suddenly think, /hey, they haven't used a contraction in a while./ I love my contractions. Contractions are my best friends.
Bic: "But it's impossible for a leader to know each and every warrior as well as they know themselves. Since they don't know each and every warrior as well, each and every warrior should be able to make decisions. Why do you think one cat would make a better decision all on her own than a whole group of cats working together to make a decision? I think that if all cats worked together to make decisions, it would form a stronger group bond than one cat telling them what to do all the time. Do you think that, for some reason, a leader is automatically more intelligent than all the others combined?" Patchfur was confused, but not angry. "And I wasn't talking about /our/ territory. I was talking about other territories. Obviously, our land isn't the only territory in the world. Maybe, in some lands, the nights /are/ warm."

"Yes, the warriors do still retain the capability of making decisions while living in a Clan, and no, the leader is not more intelligent than all the others combined, though I daresay it would be beneficial to give the position to one of the more intelligent cats. As I said, the centralization of decisions is how better decisions are made. Now, even if regions existed where nights are warm, we would never encounter them, and they would have no effect on our lives, so I shall put it out of my mind."
