"I know that a leader would be the boss. I know that they would make decisions and not the other cats. I know that they and the deputy would be the only cats with power. And I don't think that's fair. I think every cat should be equal, and we should all share the power. We could make decisions as a whole instead of having the leader decide. Why would I want to live under a leader? I don't want to be told what to do every minute of the day!" he meowed. "Oh, and my name's Patchfur."

"Well, the stories of Clanhood don't have to be followed the exact same way-perhaps a council of three or four representatives, voted on by the ordinary cats, could make decisions on the small things, and everyone could vote on large things?" Spiderpaw paused. "I've gotten off-topic; we're talking about the experiment, not what the actual thing could be like. And Woodstripe's organizing it, so..."

Patchfur scraped his paws on the sandy earth nervously. "Well, having four cats in power is as bad as one. I think all cats should be able to vote. But you're right, that isn't the point. I would love to be in the experiment, if it wasn't for the leader issue. I don't think I could stand being ordered around -do this, do that- for a single day, let alone many."

"Patchfur, you speak as though you are against Clanhood. You are not, are you?" She tilted her head with an inquisitive look. "I am afraid I must correct you where you are mistaken. All the clanmates could have input on decisions. The leader would not give orders each minute to each cat - there would not be a need. The leader is the head of the Clan's organization, this is all. Now Spiderpaw also raises a point. The participants may make as many alterations to the experiment's structure as they wish, with one constant - there must be an authority. You see, Patchfur, by sampling this way of life, you can make more accurate arguments against it. Also, it would not have to last long. It is my desire that this experiment be as enjoyable as possible for everyone."

"I would much enjoy the clan, if it wasn't for the leader. Clans give stability and peace to an otherwise unstable, conflicted lifestyle. Besides, if the leaders just make decisions based on all the cats' input, why do we need them? We would do that ourselves, without a leader. You say that the leader would recieve input from all the cats. That's exactly like all the cats sharing power. But fine, I'll try it. Seven days only, though. I don't think I could stand being treated like an inferior any longer than that," Patchfur growled.

"You wouldn't be treated like an inferior," Woodstripe chuckled. She gave Patchfur a reassuring rub, sliding her temple across his shoulder. "Seven days, then. I appreciate your compliance. Redstream, Spiderpaw, Batkit, do you think that is a satisfactory duration?"

Patchfur scowled, his tail lashing back and forth. Woodstripe was lying through her teeth, and he knew it. "Yes, I would. We all would. That's what leaders do. They tell us what to do, and we have to follow their orders. We do what they want. It sounds like us non-leaders would be treated like inferior cats. But again, I'll try it. I'm always glad to have evidence for my opinions."

"Seven days sounds like an adequate amount of time," Spiderpaw mewed. After a minute, she asked curiously, "Say, Woodstripe, where did you get the idea for this experiment?" She smiled tentatively. 'I wonder how Batkit feels about Patchfur's opinions,' she thought to herself. 'He seems so young. But it's good that some young orphans already support Clanhood.'

"She wanted to see what it was like to have control over a large group of cats. She wanted to have a chance to be leader, of course," he growled angrily. "All leaders want is power. That's all they care about. I want to be in this experiment to prove that, and to see how much she-" he flicked his tail towards Woodstripe "is willing to give for power."

"I see you don't believe me, Patchfur," Woodstripe mewed, sounding both confused and mournful of the fact. She ignored him for a moment as she turned her broad, brown face to Spiderpaw. "I recall conversing with a group of cats not long ago who were resisting my advocation of Clanhood. Somehow the discussion led to the suggestion - I'm sure you can understand, they were speaking ill of leadership, and of course, if I had contrary evidence, it would make my stance an easier one to take." With a patient smile she corrected Patchur. "Nowhere in my planning for this experiment did I count on playing the part of leader myself. That is for all of us to decide together. I do offer my sincerest apologies if I implied otherwise."
