"Thank you," meowed Patchfur. "We never did anything to antagonize you, and now you insult us? I don't see how this will accomplish anything helpful. It will only make us fight against each other, when really we need all the support we can get for a Clan. The leader issue can wait until the Clan has been formed."

" 'W-why are you ins-sulting us?' " Shortwhisker mimicked in a shrill voice. "B-bats and c-crickets are not cats. They d-don't have the b-brains to have a leader." He gave Patchfur a meaningful look. "And s-see, the m-m-mother and father share power, like a leader and d-deputy. When we m-make a Clan, it w-will have to have a l-leader. Otherwise th-that's not a C-Clan."

"The mother and father only lead because their kits aren't old enough to do it themselves. You're conviently forgetting the fact that when kits are old enough, they grow up and lead themselves! Bats and crickets survive, don't they? There's no shortage of them, is there? So their strategy must work too." Patchfur's eyes gleamed angrily. "And about your other comment. It was a legitimate question. What have I ever done to you to deserve an insult?"

As long as Patchfur attacked leadership, Shortwhisker would defend it rather than address anything else. "S-sure, they c-can 'survive'. Anyone c-can 'survive'. B-but I'm s-sick of th-that. I want a g-g-good life, w-where a leader k-keeps everyone on t-task and makes sure w-what needs t-to be d-done is done. Sure, you c-could st-start off a little 'C-Clan' without a-a leader, but s-sooner or later someone w-would centralize the p-power. Cats c-can't be equal b-because we're n-not all the s-same."

"So you're saying some cats are better than others?!" Patchfur yowled angrily, his tail lashing and his fur raised with anger. "And what makes them better, hm? They're just normal cats, like everyone else! Sure you may choose the strongest, best fighting cat to the be the leader, but what will happen when you find out that they aren't a very good hunter? Or the opposite? All cats have weaknesses. No cats are perfect, and all cats are equal!" The last four words of his little speech were yelled so loudly, he was sure every cat in the enclosure could hear. He didn't care. How could Shortwhisker think some cats are better than others? It was a horrible idea, like some cats were just destined to be great and others were destined to fail. It was unfair, and cruel. He wouldn't stand for it. At all.

Spiderpaw hurriedly meowed, "There's no reason to get upset. We all want a Clan-can't we decide on the leader issue after we gain more support for a Clan?" She tried not to look panicked. 'Surely a fight won't break out,' she thought. 'Honestly, this is ridiculous. Clanners fighting each other! If this becomes commonplace, then we'll never be able to unite and become a Clan!'

Patchfur sighed, trying to relax. "But don't you think it's wrong to say one cat's better than another? It's like saying, the leader's the best, the deputy's great, everyone else is normal, and disabled cats are lame. I don't want a system like that. I don't want cats to think they're better than any other cat. Because really, they aren't. Not at all."

"I'm s-saying that c-cats are d-different. Some are b-better at s-smelling, or s-seeing, or p-pouncing, or g-grasping concepts. S-stop putting w-words in my m-mouth, sheesh!"

Ooc: WTDUCK? What do you mean?
Bic: "But since all cats are different, they all have weaknesses. No cat is perfect, so a leader would just be a normal cat. If cats shared power, they could make up for each other's weaknesses, but just one cat in power would mean that that single cat has to make up for his own weakness. Which is hard," he meowed logically, his fur flattening and claws retracting.

"Patchfur's right. Every cat has different strengths and weaknesses, and the strengths usually negate the weaknesses. So every cat should be treated the same." Frailheart eyed Patchfur warily. "You say that you don't like a system in which disabled cats are 'lame', as you put it. But in a Clan-even one without a leader- the strong would be able to go on rat hunts, easily find water for the Clan, and so on. But the weak cats wouldn't be as good at such things, and eventually a hierarchy would evolve in which the strong were better than the weak."
She paused a bit before adding, "Which some cats believe we already have."
