"You d-don't want to f-follow a leader just b-because you're l-lazy and w-worthless," he spat. "What's b-b-best for one c-cat isn't any d-different than what's b-best for another. We all n-need food, w-water, and warmth at n-night. In th-that respect, we're all the s-same."

"This is true," Bronzefoot meowed. "We all need the same things. But we don't need anything special to do them. Think about it this way: if we needed help finding food, water, and warmth at night, wouldn't we already have a Clan? But each of us can find food, water, and warmth at night easily. Do we need a leader or a Clan?"

"Well, a Clan would stop us from breaking out into fights and would put us all more or less on the same side. We wouldn't fight over food, water, shelter, or territory because we all share that. It's a safer way to live. However, we don't need a leader," Patchfur replied. Shortwhisker's insults were really getting on his nerves now. "What did I ever do to deserve an insult? Have a different opinion than you? Last time I checked, that wasn't a crime. I haven't said one bad thing about you, even though I disagree. I really don't care if your opinion is different, but that doesn't mean you have to insult me! We're both pretty much on the same side. We both want a Clan."

"Yes, we n-need both a leader and a C-Clan," Shortwhisker growled. "A Clan p-protects, organizes, and provides s-security. You don't g-get any of th-that when you're alone. And a l-leader is necessary for the Clan s-system to work. And of c-course it's n-not a crime. Nothing's a c-crime! There isn't a C-Clan to m-make any laws!"

"Well, you told me exactly what a clan does, that it makes life better for cats. But what do leaders contribute to it? All I see is one cat controlling everyone else's lives. I don't want another cat controlling my day-to-day life. And if having a different opinion is not a crime, why are you insulting me?" he growled with frustration, claws sliding out and burying themselves in the sand.

Branchkit suppressed a quiet sigh, not really listening to the conversation at the moment. Toms! They never understood anything. Well, Shortwhisker was okay, she guessed, but he thought that leaders were always perfect. Didn't he even know that leaders were once ordinary cats? No one was best at everything. The brown she-cat wished she could make him realize that.
So the young female spoke up. "A leader can't be perfect in everything. Leaders were regular cats before they became leaders, weren't they?" questioned Branchkit, looking up at the black-and-white tom. "It would be impossible to find a cat that is absolutely perfect in every single way. Some might be too bossy, others too quick to decide on important decisions, and so on. Can't you see that?"
Maybe now he'll understand, thought the tabby, but she wasn't sure. Her gaze darted over to Patchfur. She didn't think he would agree, since he seemed against the idea of having a leader. Then alarm flashed through her as she spotted his claws digging into the earth. Would there be a fight after all?

Patchfur nodded, agreeing with Branchkit. "All cats are different. They have different ways of doing things. No leader would be completely right," he meowed. Slowly, he relaxed a little, pulling his claws out of the sand. "I still don't want a leader, though," he added, to make sure the two other cats knew he hadn't changed sides.

"You sh-shut your m-mouth, little g-girl," he snapped, then meowed, "A leader is the c-cat who is in ch-charge. There h-has to be s-someone in charge. That's a g-given. In f-families, there's always one cat in ch-charge. In r-rat hunts, there is alw-ways one cat the others l-look to for d-direction. Whenever you have a g-group of cats working t-together, someone has to b-be in charge. It's the n-natural order of th-things. Even if you st-started a Clan without a l-leader, in the end, s-someone would b-become the one in ch-charge. There's c-chaos without a b-boss."

"Are you sure that there's always chaos without a boss?" Patchfur asked. "Bats don't have a specific leader. They simply fly out at night, eat insects, and come back in. Crickets don't have a leader either. In families, in case you didn't know, the mother and father share power, and that's only because young kits need to be protected becuse they don't know what to do. Full-grown cats do, so we don't need a leader," he meowed. Shortwhisker's comments were making his blood boil. "Would you please stop insulting us? We never did anything to you besides have a different opinion, and that doesn't really deserve an insult, does it?" he asked, ginger and white fur rising.

Spiderpaw meowed, "Yeah. We all want a Clan here except Bronzefoot and Frailheart, I believe-forgive me if I forgot somebody- so why do we insult each other?"
"Indeed. You talk of fights breaking out without a leader. Obviously, this means you want a leader, and we can assume this means you don't like fights. So why are you provoking us to start fights?" Frailheart meowed, hoping her comment wouldn't cause Shortwhisker to go over the edge and attack her.
