"For once, I agree with Slatefoot," Patchfur sighed. "The experiment /was/ your idea. And why else would you start something like that other than to get a taste of what it would be like if you were leader. But Batkit's right, too. We need to find more cats. Are Bronzefoot and Slateffot going to participate?" he asked.

Bronzefoot thought about this. 'Patchfur, voting for me-a nilly. Then again, perhaps he does not know I am one, but still. Of course, just because he votes for me doesn't mean anyone else would - and would I want to be leader, anyway?' It only took him a moment to come up with an answer for this. 'No. Not only is it immoral to boss other cats around like that, I might grow to like the power. And I would only do this experiment in order to make more accurate complaints.'
He hesitated - after all, Slatefoot and Patchfur's thinking about Woodstripe was sound. But, he had an idea. The bronze tom meowed with a sly smile, "I'll participate - if only because you said you'd vote for me. Tell me when the experiment starts." With that, he winked at the group and walked away.

"Thank you, Bronzefoot," the large she-cat called after him. Woodstripe then turned back to the current crowd, taking a deep breath. "Patchfur, would it please you if I made myself exempt from nominations?"

Patchfur nodded in relief. "Yes. Yes, it would please me greatly," he meowed, glad that the bossiest of the cats was not going to try to be a leader. "Thanks, Bronzefoot!" he called after the tom. He hoped voting for him was the right thing to do. But he was sure it was. The tom didn't know Bronzefoot that well, but from what he could gather, the bronze cat was calm, kind, and level-headed. Plus, he didn't seem likely to boss them around.

Slatefoot sniffed with disdain. Why would he want to participate in such a cricket-brained idea? A Clan, in his opinion, would make everything worse than it already was.
Just then, a new thought slipped into his mind. To officially form a Clan, there would have to be a meeting of sorts. He could tag along, and when Woodstripe dominated the conversation, he could point out that she actually did want to become leader, and to the rest of the cats explain his reason why he said that. Once the attention was focused on him, the blue-grey tom could tell about bad things that would happen once there was a Clan. Such as forcing cats to do something they don't want to. A pleased expression spread on his features; let that foolish she-cat see her 'grand' idea crumbling into nothing!
Yet, he wasn't sure if he'd let himself give in so easily. He shrugged his broad shoulders inwardly. You didn't have to formally join in this dumb experiment to attend a meeting, did he? So, with a careless flick of his ears, he meowed, "What makes you think that I'd want to be included?" Snorting, he trotted away.

Patchfur shrugged. "Well, I guess Slatefoot won't be participating," Patchfur meowed, not caring one bit. After all, cats shouldn't be forced to do something they didn't want to do. If Slatefoot didn't want to participate, well, too bad for him. "So, who should we ask next?" he wondered to himself.
