Woodstripe kneaded the ground, shifting from side to side. "Why is it you assume I shall be leader, or even that I desire to be? Spiderpaw and Patchfur are just as likely of candidates. And, as for the duration... I believe I have said ten days, no?"

Ooc: I'm sorry, I just have to bring Patchfur back for this.
Bic: Patchfur had been lurking some ways away, still close enough to hear slight bits of what they were saying. He caught the words "Patchfur" and "leader" and his ears immediately lay flat against his head. That annoying she-cat Woodstripe was talking about him! Wanting to be leader! He almost laughed, but instead stalked over, his tail lashing from side to side, but his stride calm and his eyes icy, to show that he was in control. He found himself in the midst of a group of cats that included Slatefoot from before, and some others. "What?" he yowled, his voice a combination of anger and shock. "Why in the world would think I want to control other cats' lives, when I speak so often against the unfairness of it? Are you cricket-brained, or can you just not hear?" he asked in a slightly calmer tone.

"I beg your pardon, Patchfur," she mewed with a dip of her striped head. "My thoughts were such that it seemed reasonable to me that you would not mind being leader for the simple reason that you would not want anyone else to take the position. You mistrust cats with power, do you not? In that case, it is not far-fetched to think you might take power upon yourself to prevent others from abusing it."

"Haven't I also spoken against the position because I think it's unfair that only one cat gets power? Yes, I mistrust cats with powerm but that's not the main reason I don't want a leader. I don't think it's fair that only one cat controls everything about the Clan. In fact, I think I've said that many times. Maybe you just weren't listening," he meowed.

"I'm sure Woodstripe was listening," Spiderpaw meowed hurriedly, "but she does not know what you are thinking all the time, yes?" She nodded to herself. "Any of us could be leader. Why is it you assume Woodstripe will be?" This last part was directed towards Slatefoot. After a moment, she realized that Batkit probably could not be leader, but she didn't say anything about it.
Bronzefoot raised his eyebrows. "So, Patchfur," he meowed, "are you a Clanner or a con?" He definitely remembered Patchfur from the boneyard now, oh yes. He was just curious to see what Patchfur labeled himself as.

"Well, I'm sure a she-cat as intelligent as her could've noticed that I always speak ill of leaders. Besides, Woodstripe wants to be leader. We all can see that. I consider myself a Clanner, since I want a Clan. I'm just against the idea of a leader running everyone's lives. I think cats should be allowed to do what they want and live their own lives, without being controlled by a leader. You, know Bronzefoot," he added, thinking that this cat was quite reasonable, "If you join in the experiment, I'll vote for you as leader. You seem the most likely to treat us all equally and the least like to boss everyone around."

Woodstripe titled her head. "Wait a moment, Patchfur. When did I say that I desired to take the position of leader? I do not recall doing so."

"When you first came to see me, you were the head of your little group of Spiderpaw, you and Batkit. When we argued with Slatefoot, you took the lead in the argument, trying to get an apology while I settled for the best I knew he would give. You are usually also the first one to tell cats about the experiment. From all this, I can infer that you want to be leader."

"How was I head of the group? Do you say that because the experiment is of my own design? Must I be blamed for this?" she inquired. It seemed a weak argument to her. "Though, concerning my words with Slatefoot... it is true that I do at times ask better of cats than they customarily give. Now you should know that each of you are by all means welcome to inform cats of the experiment before me."

The big gray tom didn't really have a chance to respond, since the ginger-and-white cat spoke for him. "Yeah," he said, agreeing with Patchfur. "You made it, and only a cat that wanted to be leader would start up somethin' like that. If you didn't want ta' be leader, you could've found someone else that did and follow her or him around."
Batkit felt a twinge of annoyance that he wasn't included in Woodstripe's speech about the cats who could become leader. It wasn't that he wanted to, he was perfectly fine being a follower, but that didn't mean he should be ignored all the time. He piped up. "Why're we all arguing about who wants to be leader? Don't we need to find more cats before we can start talking about this stuff?"
