Slatefoot glanced at Patchfur, his eyes full of unconcern for Batkit. "Why should you care?" he spat at the tom. "And who do you think you are? You got no right to stop me from doing anything."

"I /care/ because I honestly don't think Batkit did anything to deserve being hit!" he yowled angrily. "And while I can't force you to stop, I can certainly continue yelling at you. You can't force me to stop doing /that/," the tom replied. What was /wrong/ with this tom?

Noting the current confrontation between Patchfur and Slatefoot, and what with the recent influx of intruders, Grimykit took the opportunity to slip off to a spectator's distance. He didn't care what happened now as long as, in his words, "tha' cat getza whoopin'."
Woodstripe gave Batkit a lick to solace him and stepped to Patchfur's side. "Slatefoot (for from what I overheard, that is your name), you must understand that it is a violation of moral principles to hurt a kit, supremely without proper justification for the act. I now request that you express remorse for your deed."

Patchfur was relieved when Woodstripe stepped up next to him. He was a small tom, and probably wouldn't win a fight against the larger and more powerful Slatefoot. With Woodstripe by his side, Slatefoot was outnumbered. However, Patchfur was also surprised that Woodstripe, who he constantly argued with, would step up and agree with him. /I guess we have the same morals/ he thought. "I don't know why you feel it necessary to hurt a kit, but like Woodstripe said, I want you to apologize. And never do it again."

"Remorse? Why should I apologize? I don't want to, and if I don't want to do something, then I'm not doing it." Slatefoot glared at Woodstripe, but then relaxed his gaze slightly as he parted his jaws in an insolent yawn. "Besides, there's nothing you can do about it. Unless you're already thinking yourself as the leader of this place." He spat the word 'leader' out as if the mere sound of it disgusted him. He narrowed his yellow-green eyes again as he listened to Patchfur speak. "Another cat that thinks he can tell me what to do?" meowed Slatefoot, his hackles rising in a silent challenge. A low growl rumbled from his throat, but he didn't attack. The tom had had enough fighting for this day, but if he had to, he would. Out of the corner of his eye he spotted his enemy Grimykit sneak off. Satisfaction welled in Slatefoot's chest; that cricket-brain would never mess with him again!
The dark gray tabby slowly crept out from his little hideout behind Patchfur, his steps cautious. He had recovered from the blow that the scarred tom had given him, and his confidence that he was safe grew as Woodstripe licked him. 'I don't like him...' thought Batkit. 'I hope he doesn't join in on the experiment.'

Patchfur's fur bristled, but he calmed himself, seeing that Batkit was okay. "Fine, whatever, you don't have to apologize," the tom meowed in exasperation. "Just don't do it again. Please?" He knew it would be impossible to get the tom to do what he and Woodstripe wanted, so he settled for this.

Woodstripe was not afraid of him. As far as she knew, she had three supporters who were willing to help her if Slatefoot attacked. The fact that Patchfur less than liked her (and that Batkit was only a kit) didn't cross her mind.
"You should apologize because the willful infliction of pain on a kit is immoral. Do you disagree?"

The blue-gray feline glared at the three cats, including the little tabby that he had swatted. He would not dignify the other tom's request with an answer. But the two cats began to irritate him so much, he couldn't help but meow, "I don't care. Why should I? He's not my kit or anything, and I don't have to listen to you." His reply was directed toward the tall brown she-cat.

Patchfur knew he was talking to Woodstripe, but he couldn't help but answer the tom's question. "Sure, he isn't your kit, but he's still a kit. He didn't even know what he was doing! It was a complete accident. You punished him for no reason. And I know I won't get an apology out of you, so if you just promise not to do it again, I'll leave you alone."

Slatefoot rolled his eyes. The other tom might never leave him alone if he kept on refusing to do anything about what had just occured, so he spat, "Yeah, whatever. I won't do it again." But his narrowed gaze showed that he didn't care about his words. It didn't seem that he would keep his promise either.
