"Woodstripe has said before that no one would be forced to join a Clan," Bronzefoot put in. "I do not know whether her opinion on that has changed since then, however. I mean, let's think of it this way - if the hunting of the Clanners was more efficient than the hunting of the non - Clanners, then the Clanners might end up taking a lot more food than the non - Clanners."

"That would be possible; it is true. Obtaining fresh meat would become easier for Clan cats and more difficult for cats who have not sought membership. From any perspective, then, would it not be a wise choice to join the Clan?"

"Perhaps," Bronzefoot meowed. "Indeed, let us say that all cats who did not like the idea of a Clan saw this and joined Clanhood just for that reason, and only for that reason. Now, let us suppose that the majority of those cats didn't like being told what to do. What if they refused to do what they were ordered to?"

"Oh, she did?" Beetlepaw asked, not really paying attention anymore, "Must not have heard her." Her tail flicked back and forth as she listened to Bronzefoot and Woodstripe speak. She wasn't exactly sure what to say, so she just added, "Yes, yes, it might be a wise choice to join the Clan then, but not all cats are smart. Not saying that any of us are stupid," she added quickly.

"Refused orders, Bronzefoot? A leader isn't much of a leader if cats do not consider his or her benign suggestions worth an ear. If a leader were so lacking in charisma, it seems this cat would not be selected to lead in the first place." She turned to her fellow she-cat. "Now Beetlepaw, while some cats do not posses as much intelligence as others, I doubt anyone is beyond the persuasion of an aching belly."

Bronzefoot looked at Woodstripe rather coldly. "Perhaps I am unique, but I would not take orders from any leader, unless it was me. And I would not want to have the burden of leader at all." A scowl formed on his face, making him appear quite hostile.

Woodstripe paid Bronzefoot's expression no mind and asked, "What do you imagine a cat would order you to do that you would refuse? As I envision it, leaders would not so much give 'orders' as keep up with water sources and fresh-kill numbers. They would also organize hunting parties, though cats would be free to modify these to their preferences."

"Anything," Bronzefoot meowed firmly. "I would not do anything a leader wanted me to do unless I wanted to do it." He paused for a moment. "If the old stories were true - which I don't think they are - the leader and deputy locked our ancestors in here, yes? And that was because we supposedly followed their orders. That could show what happens when you do things someone outside your family tells you to do - that is, if the stories were true, it would show that."

She shook her striped head. "If the stories were true, which of course they are, it would show that some cats are selfish enough to betray their traditions for love. However, this tradition of restricting authorities in such a manner is no longer in place, so it is no hindrance. Now, if a leader asked you to complete a task and you desired to do so, would you?"

"What proof is there that the stories are true?" Bronzefoot meowed. "Only if I desired to do so, and there are not many tasks that I would wish to do." He looked at Woodstripe, wondering what she would say next.
