"Why hide our inner feelings?" Bronzefoot meowed. "There is no reason to say things you don't mean, nor to show respect for anyone but oneself and one's kin." He glanced slyly at the untouched lizard. "Are you going to eat that?" he meowed bluntly.

"Hide our inner feelings?" Woodstripe questioned. She had not intended to imply that. However, she saw how he would draw that conclusion and attempted to weave it into a good thing. "While some feelings are good and positive, there are some emotions that are worthy of concealment. Cats can get angry and want to attack their fellow felines, and will do so, as you know. In a Clan, cats are obligated not to do this, reducing, if not eliminating, the number of fights. A Clan would make necessary that cats work things out in a diplomatic fashion, involving a third party. This method requires that some stronger emotions not be acted on but serves the good of all."

"I don't see the point of hiding the way I feel. Sure, I don't look for fights, but I don't say things I don't mean, either. When cats get their feelings hurt because of a few wayward words, that's because they're soft. Our feelings should not be affected by anyone except our family and ourselves," Bronzefoot meowed.

"I wasn't planning on it," Beetlepaw admitted. She was a bit shocked that he would ask her that, but she knew that she shouldn't predict what other cats would do, especially ones she didn't know. Her tail-tip twitched as she tried not to predict anything else. "But," she began, entering the conversation again, "what if the cats have a good reason for being angry? Like if another cat does something to anger them. Shouldn't the cat at least have the chance to teach the other cat a lesson, so they won't mess with him or her again?" She suggested.

Woodstripe narrowed her eyes. Despite this, her relaxed pose and cool composure remained intact. "I'm not advocating falsehood, Bronzefoot. I'm advocating more peaceful solutions. All cats have their reasons for unsheathing their claws, of course, but I find that less harm comes to both sides when cats choose to resolve the issue with words and logic."

"I can understand that," Bronzefoot meowed. "But who would you trust with leadership? I would rather have no Clan at all than have to put my trust in a leader." He glanced at the other she-cat who seemed to be on his side, wondering what she would say in response to this.

Woodstripe answered before Beetlepaw could interject. "You are wise to be careful in who you give power to, Bonzefoot, and I agree that leadership should not be granted in haste. It would be mandatory that any cats wishing to reform the Clan give the selection of a leader time and thought. However, I am sure that..." She hesitated, green gaze flickering to the walls before returning to the tom. "...some cat is worthy of the responsibility."

"I disagree." Bronzefoot paused a little bit to let this sink in. "I do not think that any cat alive today is worthy of the responsibility. I trust nobody but myself." He stared coldly at Woodstripe, wondering what she thought of this statement. For an instant, thoughts of his long-dead brother trickled into his mind, but he inwardly waved them away.

"The only cat I've ever put my trust in was myself. This is the way I've always lived and I don't plan to change now. Infact, I find no need to change." Beetlepaw snorted. "Oh and, I did trust my mother and father when I was with them," she added before any cat could assume anything. "When you say 'some cat', who are you referring to? Do you have any cats in mind who you think would make a good leader?" She narrowed her eyes, wondering what this she-cat's response would be.

While considering her approach to answering the tom, Beetlepaw's question caught Woodstripe off guard. She hesitated, then meowed, "...Well, as I have said, that would take time and thought." To avoid saying more, she made a quick turn to Bronzefoot. "Why is this that you trust no one? Leadership is not for any and all, we both know, because some cats do not manage it well - they are gifted in other areas. Perhaps you remember our discussion from earlier? I pose this question to you again: how would a cat take advantage of power for wrongdoing? I am indeed curious to know." In fact, she hoped he would give her a long answer that would prevent either of them from pressing her about Beetlepaw's question.
