Woodstripe was on the prowl, a limp lizard hanging from her jaws. No, this big tabby was not searching for prey. She was searching for predators. Her plan was to walk along the wall to encounter the "edge-lings" (as she thought of them), cats who stayed by the edge of the enclosure, and then begin to move inward. Her yellow-green eyes swept the area for feline life, be it young or old, strong or weak. Any pair of ears would do.

Beetlepaw lifted her head from where she lay, hearing footsteps. She swiveled her ears around to hear better. When she noticed that the soft sounds were coming from near the wall, she looked around, spotting another female cat. She had prey... mhm. The small brown tabby licked her lips, eyeing the lizard. But then a thought hit her. 'If this cat already has prey, then what is she looking for....?' Beetlepaw thought to herself, her white tail-tip twitching.

Woodstripe observed that she had caught the attention of a she-cat off to her left. Talking to her would not be following the plan... but she didn't mind improvising. Deciding to leave edge-lings for another day, the large she-cat trotted toward Beetlepaw and dropped the lizard before her.
"Greetings and goodwill to you, dear comrade! If you are hungry, mayhap, would you please take this lizard as a gesture of kindness?" she inquired.

"No," Beetlepaw huffed. "That's your prey, you eat it."
She wondered why this she-cat would offer such a thing. 'Gesture of kindness....?' She almost laughed at the thought. Kindness didn't belong here. Or at least, that's what Beetlepaw thought. Survival of the fittest. And if that was the way she thought, why would she eat some other cat's prey, giving them less of a chance?
"I catch my own prey." Beetlepaw confirmed. "But.... oh, why would you give it to me?"

"I am well aware that a strong and healthy warrior such as yourself has full capability of hunting and providing for herself. This gift is a representation of respect. I have had my fill for the day and, since I have no need for this additional sustinance, I find it best to offer it to others. You see, if more cats worked together in this way, we would experience hunger with less frequency and make more productive use of our time."

"Respect...." Beetlepaw huffed again, "who needs it? I sure don't. I don't respect any cat and no cat respects me. But, if you insist..."
'Well, it's free prey.... might as well take it,' she thought, all thoughts from earlier gone. She eyed the lizard one more time before pulling it closer to her with one of her claws. She listened to this cat carefully, before sighing.
"Oh, I get it," Beetlepaw grunted. "You're one of those cats... the ones that actually want a Clan, eh? And, while I'm at it, what's your name, anyways?"

"Indeed, I insist, and I respect all cats, including you." She dipped her striped head. "My name is Woodstripe. And your name?" The tabby paused and tilted her head. "You seem to regard the idea of Clanhood with contempt. I'm sure you have good reason to do so. Would you be so generous as to reveal this to me?"

"Why? I mean, why do you respect all cats?" The she-cat questioned. "If you ask me, it's a stupid idea, 'specially if other cats aren't gonna respect you in return. But, then again, you didn't ask me." "Beetlepaw." She informed her. "Clan schman. I guess I could tell you...." Beetlepaw blinked, thinking of how to describe her reasons. "Well," she began, "I don't need any other cats. Plus, I don't need no cat telling me what to do. There's more reasons, but I don't feel like sayin' 'em." The brown tabby spat.

"I respect all cats because I know that each individual is unique and valuable. We're all different and we all have our own useful skills and ideas to contribute. I am aware, Beetlepaw, that you can function as an independent cat as much as anyone else. Yet to catch a rat, what do we do? We hunt together. To keep warm at night, what do we do? We rely on one another. These things cannot be accomplished alone."

"Unique... how so? We're all cats, nothin' special. If we were meant to be a Clan, we wouldn't be shut in this cage, now would we?" Beetlepaw pointed out. "We might hunt together to catch a rat, but we don't stay together long, do we? I eat my share, then scat. Nothin' else. I don't need nobody to keep warm. If it means staying with another cat for long, I'd rather be cold and alone."
