What she had meant to be a simple speech had generated more discourse than she had foreseen. Although Woodstripe was eager to finish making all the points she had planned, she was willing to be patient. Her moment would come. The voices of disagreement among her audience were growing in passion and volume, muddling into a discordant miasma of meows, the atmosphere of a controlled lecture under her guidance now crumbling into the usual spitting and shouting, and then her ears picked out the perfect cue: "Every cat should be responsible for themselves; they shouldn't have to worry about taking care of others."
Woodstripe seized upon Lichenfur's words. "Responsibility is a noble virtue. I do wonder, though, on the sustainability of individualism. For a moment, I will put aside the idea of what should be and now, if you will, please examine with me our current state of affairs. We live in cobwebs and chaos. We live in darkness and disorder. Consider how we live: when we hunt rats, we work as a team. We have to work together in order to bring down our biggest prey. At night, we huddle for warmth. Without each other, we would freeze to death. Our closeness brings us life.
"Now think, is this not all true? Do not we depend on each other already?" It was a rhetorical question, but any cat could see she was going somewhere with this.
