Speckledclaw heaved a sigh of thanks and ran over to drink. After she'd gotten rid of her thirst, she trotted back to make sure the other cat was okay.
"What are your names, anyhow? I am Speckledclaw."

The she-cat ate crickets? Bigstep wouldn't stand for that. He was the Cricket Protector!

The tom slowly walked towards her, his fur bristling more and more with each step. By the time Bigstep was right in front of Speckeldclaw's face, his tail and neckfur were completly spiked.

"My name Bigstep. I protect crickets. Crickets my friends," Bigstep announced menacingly. It was startling to see how quickly he could change moods over a few bugs. The black tom threatened, "Speckledclaw no hurt crickets. No more eat. You eat lizards instead."

Completely caught off guard, Speckledclaw backed a few steps away as Bigstep approached. Clearly the prickling of his fur was intentional this time. Speckledclaw flattened her ears against her head, claws once more digging into the sand as they unsheathed, hairs on her back standing up.

"Bigstep," Speckledclaw snapped, as she lapsed back into her usual habit of snapping at people. "I eat what I want and no one except my mentor tells me what to do. These crickets might be your friends," she said the word with a bit of amusement in her voice, "but I've eaten them time over again and I will continue doing so!"

The she-cat paused momentarily, for a split-second, to calculate her chances. The tom had her easily outsized, but there was a chance that Speckledclaw had enough skill to overcome that.
She remembered her stomach.
No, it would not do to fight such a large cat, the warrior reasoned with herself. Those rats from earlier had already sucked away most of her energy. She would be faced with a large disadvantage.

Speckledclaw forced herself to calm down and resume a relaxed position, thinking of what she could say to get the tom to back off. She glared at the tom, locking eyes, and stated simply, "I never liked crickets anyway."

Ooc: I did that! It's not working!

Bic: Rainstripe sighed. This was another reason she didn't wanted to be in a clan. Cats would always be telling her what to do. "Bigstep," she meowed, sighing in exasperation. "Cats can eat whatever they want. You can protect /these/ crickets, but you can't stop them from eating crickets at all. That's just not fair," she said. She turned to Speckledclaw. "Actually, lizards taste much better than crickets. You should try one." Rainstripe tried to keep a friendly tone in her voice as she meowed to Speckledclaw, but in reality, talking to these two cats was making her exasperated.

"I have," Speckledclaw mewed back, rather snappishly. Her ears were still perked and ready to detect anything amiss. "I've hunted just about everything edible in these walls." Her ears twitched as she awaited the tom's response.

A larger cat sauntered by, seemingly appearing out of nowhere. He lazily pounced on a nearby cricket, stuffing it into his mouth. Orangestorm had been dying for a snack, and apparently he had just so happened to strike gold. Speckledclaw watched, feeling slightly annoyed. This was bound to raise sparks.

Rainstripe rolled her eyes. Just great. Now /another/ cat had arrived, and though she desperately wanted to leave, she couldn't. Bigstep might say something that would provoke these two, and though he was strong, he couldn't possibly take on two cats at once. She needed to be here to soothe the cats' tempers if Bigstep said something. "Good for you, then," she meowed, her eyes narrowed. "What other business do you have here?" she asked, eager for these two cats to leave.
