No, I mean, what time of day? Because if he passed away later that evening from blood loss and infection, I'd assume the bite would have to be fairly recent.

Perhaps in most situations I could understand, but, why did they do everything their mother told them to? What did she provide for them at that point? I don't see any reason for them to stick around her. xP Might just be me.

Or did they start believing everything she said, even with evidence to the contrary?

They would have felt guilty for neglecting her, for she was an old cat and they still loved her in a way.
