Hmm. Bone would be viable, I think.

What about feather? Birds flying over the enclosure could easily drop them. Suppose this could occur often enough for them to remember what feathers are?

I hadn't considered anything falling into the enclosure besides stuff like rain and hail. mm... A feather falling in the right position (rather than fluttering length-wise) doesn't seem like it'd happen often, even if I guess it's possible. But we were talking about prefixes here.

Can't feather be a prefix? After all, a kitten could be as soft as a feather. Or something like that.

Well, I imagine birds would perch on the enclosure' s top as a hunting lookout. Inevitably, they start preening their feathers, and then some will fall down, especially when they molt. So for a small, light kitten with soft fur, feather could work. OOH bone is a good one!

Fur texture really isn't something that you can tell in a newborn. I suppose a runt could be light as a feather, but, egh, I'm adverse to that prefix and I've always opposed it in regular names. It just seems like the kind of name someone would pick for a female cat of the "shy and nice" variety of cardboard, in the same way that I will always suspect any white cat with blue eyes who isn't deaf to be some purity sue.

Would Snake- or Adder- work? I've been thinking about this for some time, but wouldn't a mouse or a rabbit find it's way into the enclosure once in a while? Can they work as prefixes as well?

Maybe... I have discussed the possibilities of snakes and rabbits entering the enclosure on occasion. I'm not sure if adders live in deserts, though. /no snake knowledge besides rattlers. Same thing with mice; I know there are kangaroo rats that live in deserts, but I'm not sure if mice do.

Adders live in deserts. Puff adders live in deserty areas of Africa, I think. And I think Feather- would work because you always check our characters to make sure they aren't cliche like the one you just described. Feather only describes their weight and has no bearing on their personality. A person could make a twisted evil tom that loves to kill things named Feather-something,

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AdderLet's see. In the Warriors books, adders were the common European adders. Death adders can live in several different types of habitat, including grassland and savannah, but I'm not sure about deserts. Wikipedia lists Agkistrodon contortrix mokasen under adder, too, but I know those as copperheads. mm... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pseudocerastesen.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitis <-- "puff adders" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EristicophisIt looks like there are plenty of vipers that live in deserts, so that could be a prefix. "you always check our characters to make sure they aren't cliche like the one you just described." -- x) Well. I try to assure that everything has a reason to back it up if it needs backing. That doesn't mean I can assure a character is well-developed every time. People think the process is stringent enough already. BEWARE THE MERCILESS FEATHERFACE. :D? ahaha. Okay, if someone wants to try it, I'll give Feather its due consideration, but this is another one I wouldn't suggest myself. /adds Bone to suggestion list
